The Miner swimming team, coached by Mark Mullin and assisted by Doug Grooms, recorded the highest finish ever by a Missouri S&T athletic squad in a national championship event, finishing in third place at the NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships. Led by All-America performances from 10 individuals at the meet, the Miners scored 234 points to earn the third place trophy. All five of the Miner relay teams set school records and finished in fifth place or better, led by a runner-up showing by the 400-yard medley relay team of Josh Jolly, Tyler Christensen, Steve Caruso and Tom Beccue.   Jolly broke two school records at the national meet on an individual basis, while the other three members of the 400-medley relay and David Nurre also broke school standards during the 1998 NCAA Championships held in Canton, Ohio.
