Dawson was one of the top two-sport athletes while at the university, standing out on both the basketball court and football field. He spent his first four seasons with the men's basketball team, where he averaged in double figures in each of his last three years, including a mark of 15.3 points a game as a junior. A two-time All-MIAA selection, Dawson completed his Miner basketball career with 1,342 points, which ranked seventh on the all-time list and among the career leaders in three-point baskets, steals and blocked shots. In 1993, Dawson suited up for the Miner football team and earned all-conference honors in that sport as well after catching 38 passes for 516 yards.
