A standout two-sport athlete for the Miners, Walters was one of the top baseball pitchers in school history as he was named to three all-conference teams. He set career records for starts, wins, strikeouts, complete games and innings pitched while in a Miner uniform. As a football player, he was a wide receiver who caught 15 passes for 239 yards and three touchdowns during UMR’s undefeated season in 1980. He also played at quarterback and punted for the Miners during his playing career, when the team recorded a record of 32-9-2 and won two MIAA titles.
