Mulvaney was the first two-time All-America performer in the history of the Miners' cross country program, finishing 20th at the 1997 NCAA Division II Championships after finishing among the top 25 American runners a year earlier. During his cross country career, Mulvaney had a pair of top-10 finishes at the MIAA Championships, headed by a fourth place showing as a senior, while also taking fifth at that year's Great Lakes Regional. In track & field, Mulvaney was the MIAA's second place finisher in the 5,000-meters in 1997 and a year later, finished fourth in that event and fifth in the 10,000. He had seven top-eight finishes at the conference meet during his career.
