The Miners’ 1985-86 swimming team posted the highest finish at the time for a Miner squad at the NCAA Division II Championships, scoring 181 points to finish eighth under head coach Mark Mullin. Eight members of that squad earned a berth to national – seven of them going on to earn All-America honors – and seven school records were broken during the meet. Two members of that squad, Derek Coon and Jon Staley, finished second on an individual basis in their respective events. In addition, the Miners had a 10-1 record in dual meets as well during that season while facing a number of NCAA Division I schools.
