The Miners concluded the 1969 campaign with a final record of 7-2 – the best mark posted by the school's football team in 19 seasons. The team, guided by head coach Dewey Allgood, opened that campaign with six straight victories, the first time that had occurred since 1914, and recorded victories over Southwest Missouri State and Illinois-Chicago at Soldier Field along the way. Offensive lineman Frank Winfield earned All-America honors and was one of six Miners named to the All-MIAA team; nine members of the team have been inducted into the Hall of Fame.   The defense intercepted 28 passes that season and held its opponents to just 222 yards of total offense per game, while the Miners reached the end zone a school record 36 times.
