Missouri S&T Athletics

Martin had a long and distinguished history in the Miner men’s basketball program, where he spent 29 seasons as a coach.  He began his career at Missouri S&T as an assistant coach under Billy Key for seven seasons, then took over the reins of the program in the 1987-88 seasons and headed the Miners for the next 22 years, where he finished with the second-most wins in program history prior to retiring from coaching after the 2008-09 campaign.  During a career in which he led the Miners to 242 wins, he earned MIAA and South Central region “Coach of the Year” honors after the 1995-96 season when the Miners won a school record 25 games, the MIAA regular season and tournament titles and reached the championship game of the NCAA Division II South Central Regional.  Martin led the Miners to the program’s highest national ranking of eighth during that season, while also leading S&T to the MIAA Tournament on nine occasions and recording seven wins during his coaching career over nationally-ranked opponents, three of them in the top 10.
