A letterman in football from 1967-70, Hanstein was a first-team All-MIAA linebacker in three of those seasons.  He was chosen as the team’s defensive player of the year in 1970 and also served as president of M-Club.  In addition, Hanstein starred in track & field in the shot put, javelin and discus.
