As a member of the women's track & field program, McDonald became one of the best sprinters in the MIAA during her career – which included three conference championships -- and would also earn All-America honors along the way when she finished eighth in the 100-meter dash at the 2005 NCAA Division II Championships. As a Miner, she established school records in the sprints, setting records in the indoor 60-meter dash of 7.69 seconds and indoor 200-meters of 25.61 seconds, while also establishing marks in the outdoor 100-meters of 11.95 seconds and 200-meters with a time of 24.37 seconds. McDonald qualified for the NCAA national meet on four occasions during her career.
