Alford was a standout performer in football and track & field for the Miners during the early 1960s.  In track & field, Alford was a two-time MIAA champion in the outdoor high jump and also finished second twice in the indoor high jump, setting school records in the process.  He also placed among the top six in the event at two other MIAA meets.  Alford played quarterback on the football team, earning second-team All-MIAA honors following the 1962 campaign and completed his career with 1,676 yards passing and 1,915 yards of total offense.
