From 1951-54, the Rolla native was one of the most dominant golfers in the history of the MIAA.  On three occasions, he earned medalist honors as the Miners won the team title in each of those years – 1951, 1953 and 1954 – and set a new conference record with a score of 134 at the 1953 MIAA Championships.  He later coached a Miner team to a conference title.  In 1951, Lanning was the runner-up in the National Public Links competition held in Milwaukee, Wis.
