COLUMBIA, Mo. – On the second day of the three-day Mizzou Invitational, Missouri S&T got its first NCAA Division II provisional cuts of the season as a quartet of Miners hit the necessary standard to highlight the Miner efforts on Thursday.
Andy Huffman (Lee's Summit, MO/Lee's Summit),
Nolan Fergus (Aurora, IL/Marmion Academy), Josh Umrysh and
Noah Clancy (Alton, IL/Alton) all reached the B-cut standard over the course of Thursday's competition. Huffman reached his first in the preliminaries of the 400-yard individual medley when he posted a time of 4:00.06 to surpass the necessary mark.
Umrysh finished with a time of 55.44 seconds in the event in the morning preliminary round of the 100-yard breaststroke to clear the provisional time of 55.56 and ended up taking eighth place in the finals in 55.52 seconds. Shortly thereafter, Clancy made his mark with a time of 48.13 seconds in the 100-yard backstroke and finished fourth in the finals in the evening session in 48.32.
Fergus got his provisional mark in the finals of the 100-yard butterfly, hitting the qualifying mark right on the nose with his time of 49.07 seconds to finish in seventh place.
That trio, along with Gabe Asevedo that posted a time of 1:28.86 in the 200-yard medley relay that just missed the provisional mark by 0.21 seconds as it finished fourth in the event.
Martin Melinder (Upplands Vasby, Sweden) had S&T's highest finish of 10
th place in the 400-yard individual medley of 4:03.29, while
Connor Wiedemeier (West Monroe, LA/West Monroe) posted a time of 1:40.96 to finish 13
th in the 200-yard freestyle. S&T also had a third place showing in the 800-yard freestyle relay, as the team of
Alec Davis (Joplin, MO/Joplin),
Connor Wiedemeier (West Monroe, LA/West Monroe),
Alex Graham (Parker, TX/Homeschooled) and
Aidan Walters (Olathe, KS/Olathe East) finished with a time of 6:49.49.
In the team standings, with 10 teams having now scored in the competition, the Miners sit in fifth place with 332 points. Host Missouri has a commanding lead over 1,000 points over Wyoming, with California Baptist and Nebraska sitting between the leaders and S&T. The Miners are the only NCAA Division II school taking part in this weekend's meet.
