ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T captured five of the 11 events contested in Friday's swimming meet with Delta State, but the depth of the Statesmen proved to be the decisive factor as DSU won the dual meet by the score of
110-95.
The Miners won four individual events and the 400-yard freestyle relay, but Delta State recorded five second place finishes and six thirds to go along with its six event wins. Much of the difference came in the second segment of the meet, when the Statesmen won four straight events and had a pair of second place efforts thrown in.
S&T got two first place finishes from
Jon Glaser (Wildwood, Mo./Lafayette), who won the 1,000-yard freestyle in 9:47.48 and 500-freestyle in 4:46.40. The other individual first place performances came from
Eirik Nielsen (Stathelle, Norway/Toppidrettsgynmaset) in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:43.94 and
Aljaz Kerc (Ljubljana, Slovenia/Gimnazija Bezigrad) in the 50-yard freestyle in 21.30 seconds.
The quartet of Kerc, Nielsen,
Keith Sponsler (Lincoln, Neb./Lincoln East) and Glaser won the 400-yard freestyle relay in a time of 3:08.43, winning that event by just over a second.
The second place showings were recorded by
Jon Anderson (Allentown, Pa./Salisbury Senior) in the 200-freestyle in 1:47.49, Nielsen in the 200-butterfly in 1:54.06, Kerc in the 100-freestyle in 47.53 seconds,
Stuart Mossop (Houston, Texas/James E. Taylor) in the 200-backstroke in 1:58.23 and
Miguel Chavez (Chihuahua, Mexico/Colegio de Bachilleres) in the 200-breaststroke in 2:07.49.
The Miners' 400-yard medley relay team of
Ryan Layne (Houston, Texas/Cypress Creek),
Miguel Chavez (Chihuahua, Mexico/Colegio de Bachilleres),
Stuart Mossop (Houston, Texas/James E. Taylor) and
Drew Larkins (Chesterfield, Mo./Parkway Central) also placed second in 3:32.99.
Third place finishes were posted by
Mike Rouleau (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) in the 1,000-freestyle in 10:08.18, Mossop in the 400-individual medley in 4:15.09, Layne in the 200-butterfly in 1:59.68 and Anderson in the 100-freestyle in 48.22 seconds. S&T also got a third place mark from its second 400-free relay team of Anderson, Rouleau,
Nate Endebrock (Colbert, Wash./Riverpoint Academy) and
Chris Lohff (Powder Springs, Ga./Hillgrove).
Missouri S&T's next competition will take place at the Missouri Invitational, a three-day meet which begins Nov. 20 in Columbia, Mo.
