Biography

2014-15: Earned numerous honors on the conference and national levels following the 2014-15 season…was named as the “Swimmer of the Year” by the Great Lakes Valley Conference and as its “Scholar-Athlete of the Year” in that sport…won GLVC titles in the 100-yard freestyle in a school record time of 44.16 seconds and 200-yard freestyle with another record time of 1:36.57…also got a first place finish as part of S&T’s winning 800-yard freestyle relay team…all three titles were repeat championships…was on the Miners’ third-place team in the 200- and 400-freestyle relays and fourth-place team in the 200-medley relay, as well as taking fourth individually in the 50-freestyle where he set a school record with a time of 20.28 seconds…finished seventh in the 200-yard freestyle at the NCAA Division II Championships and earned All-America honors with the 800-freestyle relay team that finished eighth…also landed honorable mention All-America laurels in the 200- and 400-freestyle relay and 200-medley relay…named to the Capital One Academic All-America first team and CSCAA’s Scholar All-America team.

2013-14: Earned All-America honors as part of two relay teams at the 2014 NCAA Division II Championships…was part of the 800-freestyle relay team that finished as the national runner-up and as part of the 200-free relay…was part of the 400-freestyle relay team that won the consolation championship race at the national meet…recorded the Miners’ top time in the 200-yard freestyle last season with a school record mark of 1:37.16, while having the second-best mark in the 50-freestyle (20.39) and 100-freestyle (44.68)…50-yard time broke the previous school record in the event, but was broken the following day…earned Capital One Academic All-America second team honors following the 2013-14 season….earned All-GLVC honors as he had a hand in five winning performances at the league’s inaugural meet, including wins in the 100- and 200-yard freestyle events.

2012-13: Earned four All-America awards during his freshman season in the S&T program...finished seventh in the 200-yard freestyle, where he posted a time of 1:38.44 in the finals that was the fastest by a Miner during the season...was also part of the Miners' 400- and 800-yard freestyle relay teams that earned top-eight finishes and the 200-freestyle relay quartet that earned honorable mention All-America status...took third in the 200-yard freestyle at the NSISC meet and added eighth place showings in the 50- and 100-freestyle, while being part of the 200-yard medley relay team that placed second and 400- and 800-free relay squads that took third...also had top times of 20.82 in the 50-freestyle and 45.38 in the 100-free during the season.

PERSONAL: Son of Brent Sponsler and Elaine Martens...earned the Sertoma Award for his performance in the sport and served as a team captain...earned all-city honors and NCPA all-academic laurels...set a conference meet record in the 100-yard freestyle and also won the league title in the 100-yard backstroke...also swam on the school's relay teams...majoring in nuclear engineering.
