3/14/2010 10:13:10 PM

ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's baseball team continued its hot hitting during the first game of Sunday's doubleheader with Lewis, posting a 14-6 win in the opener, but missed a chance at a sweep as the Flyers scored three times in the seventh inning to win the nightcap 7-4 at the S&T Baseball Field.

In the opener, the Miners jumped on top with four runs in the first inning. Brandon Cogan (Missouri City, Texas/Hightower) led off with a double and scored on Hunter Scheib (Lawrence, Kan./Free State)'s bunt as Lewis first baseman Miguel Amesquita couldn't come up with the throw.

Later in the inning, Zach Carter (Perkins, Okla./Perkins-Tryon) drove in two runs with a triple and later scored on an RBI single by Sam Adams (Forsyth, Mo./Forsyth).

Lewis scored twice in the second to cut the Miner lead in half, then Drew Davenport (McHenry, Ill./McHenry West) homered with one out in the fourth to extent the lead by a run. S&T added four runs in the fifth, highlighted by a double off the bat of Davenport to take a 9-2 lead into the sixth.

The Flyers scored four times in the sixth to get to within three at 9-6, but had a chance to get closer halted when Ben Pieper (O'Fallon, Mo./St. Dominic) threw out a runner at the plate to end the inning. The Miners followed by tallying single runs in the sixth on an RBI hit by Matt Kempin (Wichita, Kan./Trinity Academy) and the seventh on Will Morrison (Rolla, Mo./Rolla)'s run-scoring single.

S&T got back-to-back home runs in the eighth from Caleb Smith (Calgary, Alta./Central Memorial ) – with a man on – and Davenport to complete the scoring.

The Miners finished with 15 hits in the opener, getting three apiece from Smith and Davenport, who drove in four runs in the contest.

Andrew Page (Stoney Creek, Ont./Cardinal Newman) picked up his first victory of the season as he pitched the first six innings, striking out eight along the way. The Miners got solid relief work over the final two innings from Zach Gronek and Zac Helton (Ballwin, Mo./Marquette) to wrap up the win.

S&T also grabbed the lead in the opening inning of the nightcap, getting the first run when Cogan scored on an error on a ground ball by Pieper and the second when Kempin delivered an RBI single to score Scheib.

After Lewis tied the game in the second on a two-run homer by Vince Campagna, the Miners took the lead again on a sacrifice fly by Scheib in the bottom half of the inning.

Lewis reclaimed the lead in the fourth, but the Miners tied the game in the bottom of the frame when Cogan singled to drive home Louie Joseph (Bloomington, Ill./Central Catholic).

With darkness approaching in the late innings, the Miners couldn't take advantage of a leadoff hit by Carter in the sixth and were then doomed by an error with two outs in the seventh that extended the inning. The Flyers got a hit from Derek Thomas to move in front after the error, then added two more runs on Kyle Thomas' double that followed.

S&T got the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the seventh with one out, but Lewis starter Joe Scumaci struck out the final two hitters to end the game.

Gronek took the loss in relief despite allowing two unearned runs in three innings of work. Cogan had four hits for S&T (4-13, 2-1 GLVC) in the nightcap, while Carter and Joseph had two hits each.

The Miners will complete the suspended game from Saturday with Wisconsin-Parkside on Monday – the contest will resume at 3:30 p.m. – before S&T hosts Fort Hays State for single games on Tuesday and Wednesday.
