ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's swimming team continued its success against Drury in home dual meets Friday night, earning wins in six of the 11 events to come away with a
111-93 victory over the defending NCAA Division II champions at the S&T Pool.
The Miners came away victorious in both relays Friday, while senior
Jeff Enge (Edmond, Okla./Edmond Memorial) and sophomore
Matt Welsh (Wildwood, Mo./Lafayette) won two events apiece to help lead S&T in the meet. Enge took first in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:55.73, then captured the 200-yard backstroke later in the meet in 1:53.82.
Welsh had strong performances in the two distance freestyle events, beating defending NCAA champion Chris Jacobsen by nearly six seconds in the 1,000-yard freestyle in 9:48.78 and claiming the 500-yard event with a three-second win over DU's Mark Grijalva in 4:46.53.
S&T opened the meet by winning the 400-yard medley relay, as the team of Enge,
Zlatan Hamzic (Panceva, Serbia/Uros Predic),
Andrew Schranck (Alton, Ill./Marquette Catholic) and
Jacob Dole (Corbin, Ky./Country Day School) set the first of three pool records established Friday by posting a mark of 3:26.80. The Miners' 400-yard freestyle relay quartet of
Hayden Price (Powder Springs, Ga./Hillgrove), Dole, Schranck and
Sean Deegan (Kansas City, Mo./Park Hill) closed the night by winning that race in 3:09.85.
The Miners got second place efforts Friday from Deegan in the 200-freestyle in 21.85 seconds and 100-freestyle in 47.42 seconds,
Zach Lemons (Flagstaff, Ariz./Flagstaff) in the 200-yard individual medley in 1:56.17, Schranck in the 200-butterfly in 1:53.20 and Hamzic in the 200-breaststroke in 2:09.46.
Danny Murphy (Houston, Texas/Cypress Creek) (1:46.47 in the 200-freestyle and 4:49.77 in the 500-freestyle), Hamzic (two minutes flat in the 200-IM),
Phil Arve (Raleigh, N.C./Athens Drive) (1:55.26 in the 200-butterfly), Dole (48.22 in 100-freestyle), Lemons (2:09.87 in the 200-breaststroke) and Price (1:59.11 in the 200-backstroke) had third place showings in their respective events.
The other two pool records set Friday came from Drury's Jun Han Kim, who set marks in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:50.76 and in the 200-yard breaststroke with a mark of 2:04.56.
The Miners' next meet will take place on Nov. 20 and 21 when they compete in the Washington University Invitational in St. Louis.
