Miners post another late inning rally, take game and series from Hawks

4/26/2009 5:35:27 PM

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – For the second game in succession, Missouri S&T staged a late inning rally to stun Rockhurst, winning the finale of the four-game series 7-6 Sunday to take three of four from the Hawks over the weekend.

The victory – coming as the result of a five-run seventh inning – keeps the Miners' hopes alive for landing a spot in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament, but S&T has only a make-up game at Quincy left on its divisional slate – a game that has not yet been rescheduled. The Miners are currently 9-10 in GLVC West games and are trying to beat out Quincy and Drury for the last remaining spot from the division.

Quincy will host Southern Indiana while Drury hosts Missouri-St. Louis in four-game matchups on the final weekend of conference play.  Missouri S&T, which now stands in the third spot in the GLVC West after Sunday's action, will play outside the division at Northern Kentucky next Saturday and Sunday.

Rockhurst jumped out on top Sunday by scoring three off S&T starter Brandon Cogan (Missouri City, Texas/Hightower) in the opening inning, the big blow being a two-run double by Jordan Myers.  The Hawks extended the lead on an RBI single by Ben Baker in the third.

The Miners got on the scoreboard in the fourth with an unearned run courtesy of two Rockhurst errors in the inning. Louie Joseph (Bloomington, Ill./Central Catholic) walked to open the inning, followed by the first error that allowed Thomas McCormick (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) to reach. With two outs, Will Morrison reached on an error that allowed Joseph to score; McCormick, however, was thrown out at the plate to end the inning.

After the Hawks scored in the fifth on another RBI single by Baker, the Miners got back to within three in the sixth when Eaf Redden (Gunter, Texas/Gunter) singled to the opposite field to score Cogan.

Rockhurst extended its lead again in the sixth when Zach Troilo singled home a run, but S&T got its rally started in the seventh when Morrison led off with a double.

Kyle Klabunde (Omaha, Neb./Roncalli Catholic) followed Morrison's double with an infield single, then after the runners were moved over with a bunt, the Miners got back-to-back singles from Andrew Vance (Stilwell, Kan./Blue Valley ) and Cogan to cut the lead to 6-4. Then with two outs, Redden tied the game with a two-run single.

S&T got the eventual winning run on the Hawks' third miscue of the afternoon, as Troilo dropped a fly ball off the bat of Cody Bass (Chattanooga, Okla./Chattanooga) that allowed McCormick, who walked after the hit by Redden, to score the Miners' fifth run of the inning.

David Birkby (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway West), who got his first save of the season Saturday in the Miners' comeback win, threw three hitless innings to get the save for winning pitcher Dan Trenner (Springfield, Ohio/Springfield South). Only one hitter reached base in those three innings on an error in the seventh.

S&T (16-30) finished with 11 hits, getting two apiece from Cogan, Redden and Klabunde. Redden drove in three runs to increase his season total to 45, one shy of McCormick's single season record that he set a year ago.

The Miners are scheduled to host McKendree in a doubleheader Tuesday at 1 p.m.
