Biography
2009: Split time between the starting rotation and bullpen…finished the year at 1-2 and four saves with an 8.46 earned run average…got his win over Augustana early in the season with a season-high six innings of work…earned saves in four of his last five appearances – saving two games in the series against Rockhurst and Northern Kentucky – and did not allow a run and just one hit in the 5 1/3 innings he pitched in those four games...struck out 20 batters in 27 2/3 innings…had three innings of hitless relief with three strikeouts to earn one of his saves at Rockhurst.
2008: Was one of the Miners’ top starting pitchers in his first season with the Miners…posted a 4-3 record with a 6.56 earned run average in 48 innings of work…earned wins over Harding, Indianapolis, Harris-Stowe and Missouri-St. Louis…allowed just two runs in eight innings in the victory over Harding…struck out 21 hitters with a season-high of five against Harding.
AT MERAMEC: Posted a 4-1 record last season with a 7.32 earned run average at Meramec Community College…struck out 21 hitters in 43 innings of work…earned a spot on the Dean’s List while at the school.
HIGH SCHOOL: Earned second-team all-state honors as a player at Parkway West High School…was also an all-metro St. Louis and all-conference selection after a senior year in which he went 7-0 with a 2.57 earned run average…fanned 6.6 hitters per seven innings at the high school level…was 4-2 with a 3.22 ERA as a junior.
PERSONAL: Son of John and Marsha Birkby…majoring in business.
