S&T sits third in men's standings, fourth in women's after day one of GLVC indoor meet

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Missouri S&T's Jacob Luebbert (Warsaw, MO/Warsaw) earned the title in the weight throw with the only mark over 20-meters on Saturday, helping push the Miner track & field team to a third place spot in the standings after the first day of competition at the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championships at the University of Indianapolis.

Luebbert earned the championship in the weight throw with a mark of 66-5 as one of seven scoring performances on the first day of the meet.  Jake Anderson (O'Fallon, MO/Fort Zumwalt West) took second in the pole vault as he cleared 15-9¾, while the Miners also had a fourth place showing from its distance medley relay team as the team of Andrew Lofgren (Chesterfield, MO/Parkway West), Sam Wright (Hillsboro, MO/Hillsboro), Andrew Bacon (Webster Groves, MO/Webster Groves) and Daniel Garrison (Liberty, MO/Liberty) posted a time of 10:25.36.

Nathan Swadley (Willard, MO/Willard) was fifth in the weight throw with a mark of 57-7, while Paulvin Horton (Raleigh, NC/Garner) also had a fifth place showing in the long jump with a leap of 21-11½. Kevin McCole (St. Charles, MO/Francis Howell) had a throw of 54-1¾ in the weight throw to place seventh and Tristan Jones (Hillsboro, MO/Hillsboro) had a scoring mark by finishing eighth in the long jump with a mark of 21-7¼.

Heading into day two of the heptathlon, the Miners have the top three in the standings in Caleb Craft (Jackson, MO/Jackson), who leads with a total of 2,517 points, Dawson Sherer (Galena, MO/Galena) in second with 2,506 and Otto Knittel (Spring Hill, KS/Spring Hill) in third with 2,502.

S&T will have two finalists in the 60-meter hurdles on Sunday in Wright, who had a time of 8.33 seconds and Kyle Burke (Plainfield, IL/Plainfield), who posted a mark of 8.35 seconds in the preliminaries, as well as two in the 400-meters in Michael Pate (Wildwood, MO/Lafayette) with a preliminary time of 50.27 seconds and Aaron Toben (Wildwood, MO/Lafayette), who ran a 50.91 to make the finals.  Samuel Schmidt also qualified for the 60-meters with the second-fastest time of 6.89 seconds.

Schmidt and Toben also made the finals in the 200-meters, as Schmidt recorded a 22.30 in the preliminary round and Toben had a mark of 22.61 seconds.

Indianapolis currently leads the men's standings with 44 points, while Lewis has 37 points after the first day and the Miners are third with 34 points.

The Miner women currently sit in fourth place in the standings after a first day that saw four scoring performances.

Maya Wright captured second place in the pentathlon with a total of 3,083 points, recording a top-three finish in three of the five events.  Later in the day, Wright qualified for Sunday's finals in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.37 seconds.

Jessica Rhoads had a sixth place finish in the weight throw with a mark of 50-8¾, one spot ahead of Sydney Stephens' throw of 48-9½.  S&T's distance medley relay team consisting of Clare Holmes, Kayla Edwards, Grace Giesler and Emma Puetz also placed sixth on Saturday with a time of 13:04.07 to complete the 16-point day for the Miners.  Lewis currently holds the lead in the women's standings with 55 points.

The meet concludes Sunday with a slate full of finals throughout the day.
