CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. – Missouri S&T freshman
Andy Huffman (Lee's Summit, MO/Lee's Summit) picked up Missouri S&T's first individual title at the Great Lakes Valley Conference Swimming & Diving Championships Wednesday night as he captured the championship in the 200-yard individual medley and reached an NCAA Division II provisional qualifying time in the process.
The winning performance by Huffman, along with 10 additional scoring performances and a school record set in the 200-yard medley relay on Wednesday, has the Miners in the lead in the team standings following the first day of the four-day meet. Missouri S&T finished day one with 160 points, giving it a 10.5-point lead over defending champion Indianapolis and 31-point advantage over Drury.
Huffman had a time of 1:48.57 to edge Indianapolis' Rodrigo Codo Berti in the final, which was one-hundredth of a second off the S&T school record and came on the heels of a morning performance where he had the best time in the preliminaries at 1:48.87.
Ethan Shih (Papillion, NE/Papillion-LaVista) finished seventh in the 200-IM in 1:49.79, then led off the Miners' 200-yard medley relay team that was edged at the wall by Indianapolis – finishing second by one-hundredth of a second in a school record time of 1:28.23. Shih was joined on the relay by Josh Umrysh,
Aaron Taske (Fairfield, OH/Saint Xavier) and
Chris Betts (Katy, TX/Cinco Ranch) as the Miners were part of a trio of teams that finished within 0.03 seconds of each other at the top of the standings.
S&T also got a second place finish from Betts in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 19.94 seconds – which was also one-hundredth of a second off the school record. Betts was one of three Miners to score in the 50-free, as
Morgan Meyer (Ruston, LA/Ruston) had a time of 20.32 seconds to finish fifth and
Marco Flores (San Pedro Sula, Honduras/SERAN Private Bilingual School) finished second in the B-final in 20.54 seconds.
Meyer's time also landed him a provisional qualifying time in the event, while Flores improved his mark with his performance in the evening race.
Taske placed third in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 9:15.89 as one of three Miners to finish among the top seven in the race.
Tim Samuelsen (Stavanger, Norway/St. Svithun VGS) came in fifth in 9:19.75, while
Alex Graham (Parker, TX/Homeschooled) recorded a fifth place showing in 9:22.96 and
Jared Dachroeden (St. Louis, MO/Parkway North) scored for S&T in the event by finishing 13
th in 9:34.79.
Taske and Graham also made NCAA provisional times in the 1,000-freestyle with their showings on Wednesday, as S&T finished the first day of the conference meet with 10 individuals who have made at least an NCAA provisional time individually or as part of a relay team.
S&T's second 200-medley relay team of
Dylan Friesz (Round Rock, TX/Hutto), Flores,
Colten Becker (Overland Park, KS/Blue Valley Northwest) and
Alec Davis (Joplin, MO/Joplin) also finished second in the B-final with a time of 1:30.83.
In addition to the scored events Wednesday,
Kevin McPherson (Oakdale, MN/Tartan) reached a B-cut in the 50-freestyle in a time trial as he recorded a time of 20.33 seconds and in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 48.33 seconds, while Meyer also reached a provisional mark in the latter event in a time trial as well with his mark of 47.55 seconds that also broke the school record.
