Miners travel to Southern before hosting Upper Iowa this weekend

ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's baseball team will hit the road for a single game Wednesday against a red-hot Missouri Southern team before returning home for another four-game weekend series, as the Miners will host Upper Iowa in a pair of doubleheaders at the S&T Ballpark on Saturday and Sunday.

The Miners and Lions – whom the Miners defeated 2-0 on Feb. 14 in Rolla – will face off at 2 p.m. in Joplin, Mo., before the weekend set begins with Upper Iowa.  Both doubleheaders with the Peacocks will begin at noon.

Missouri S&T will head into Wednesday's game looking to snap a five-game losing streak after the Miners were swept in a four-game series by Augustana over the past weekend.  S&T dropped a 1-0 decision in the series opener despite a solid performance on the mound by starter Dan Borek (Greenville, WI/Hortonville), then dropped the final three games of the series to bring its record to 3-7 on the season.

Tim Lira (Granger, IN/Penn) leads the Miners with a .429 average, while Cameron Burk (Nacogdoches, TX/Cushing) is hitting .414 on the year and owns a team-best on-base percentage mark of .528.  Lucas Swindle (Weldon Spring, MO/Lutheran-St. Charles), who is hitting .333 on the year, leads S&T with six runs batted in and has the team's only home run to date.

Anthony Garza (Belleviille, IL/Belleville East) heads the pitching staff with a 2.93 earned run average, while Dalton Erger (Imperial, MO/Seckman) has a 3.14 ERA and leads the Miners with 15 strikeouts in 14 1/3 innings.  Opposing hitters have hit just .208 against him this season.

After the Miners beat the Lions in February, Southern rattled off 10 straight wins until suffering a 7-6 loss Monday to Northeastern State.  The Lions, who are 13-3 on the year, are led at the plate by Cory Canterbury with a .353 batting average and Alec Alvarez at .333.

Alex Phillips is hitting .327 and has three home runs and 15 runs batted in, while Mike Million has also homered three times and has driven in 12.   The Lion pitching staff has a 3.59 team earned run average and has held opposing hitters to a .220 average at the plate.

Upper Iowa, a member of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, is opening its season Thursday against Bemidji State at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis before coming to Rolla for the weekend series.  The Peacocks finished the 2017 campaign with a 19-29 record.

Zac Cain was Upper Iowa's leading hitter last season with a .338 average and drove in a team-high 28 runs.
