USTFCCCA All-Region lists for NCAA Division II
ROLLA, Mo. – Six members of Missouri S&T's track & field program have earned all-region honors for the 2017 outdoor season from the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
The six – three from the men's program and three from the women's squad – all finished among the top five in the NCAA Midwest Region in their respective events during the past season to earn the all-region honor. A total of 913 men and 925 women were honored by the USTFCCCA.
The men's all-region trio consists of seniors
Trevor King (Union, MO/Union) and
Jaren Underwood (Mascoutah, IL/Mascoutah HS) as well as junior
J.R. Frisella (St. Louis, MO/Oakville HS), while the women's all-region selection were junior
Camille Baker (Knoxville, TN/Knoxville Catholic HS) and sophomores
Skyler Ruszkowski (League City, TX/Clear Falls) and
Amanda Wetzel (Keller, TX/Keller) – all three of whom competed at the NCAA Division II Championships in the indoor season and won Great Lakes Valley Conference titles in the outdoor campaign.
Wetzel is an automatic qualifier for the national meet in the pole vault with the fourth-best performance in the nation this season of 13-5¾, which she cleared at the Darrel Gourley Invitational at William Jewell in April. Wetzel's clearance, which also set a new school record, is the second-best in the region this year and she repeated as the GLVC's pole vault champion earlier this month.
Baker captured the GLVC title in the heptathlon – she was also the league's multi-event champion in the indoor season – with a school record score of 4,715 points that she reached at the Woodman Heptathlon/Decathlon at Wichita State in April. She recorded the third-best mark in the heptathlon during the 2017 outdoor season.
Ruszkowski captured her first GLVC title in the high jump during the outdoor season and cleared a season-best 5-7 at Saint Joseph's during the first weekend in April. Her mark is the fourth-best in the region this year in the high jump.
King won the GLVC decathlon title for the second time in his career this spring and recorded a season-best 6,308 points in the midst of capturing the conference championship. King's point total ranks fifth among the competitors in the Midwest region this year.
Underwood broke the S&T school record in the triple jump this season with a mark of 48-3½ as he finished second at the GLVC Outdoor Championships in the event. Underwood, who finished his career with the top two triple jump marks in school history, had the region's fifth-best performance in the event this year.
Frisella broke the school's longest standing school record this spring when he finished second at the GLVC Championships in the 400-meters with a time of 47.76 seconds. In the process of breaking a record that had stood since 1981, Frisella recorded the fourth-best mark in the Midwest region this spring.
