LIBERTY, Mo. – Missouri S&T's
Piotr Gal (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South) has the lead at the halfway point of the decathlon completion in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championships, while the Lady Miners have three of the top four in the heptathlon standings through the first four events contested Thursday.
Gal holds a narrow six-point advantage over Lewis' Bryce Holesinger following Thursday's half of the decathlon with 3,539 points. He had the best performance in the long jump with a mark of 22-2¼ and 400-meters with a time of 50.27 seconds, while finishing second in the 100-meter dash in 11.25 seconds and high jump as he cleared six feet and third in the shot put with a mark of 34-8½.
S&T's A.J. Scheffler is eighth in the decathlon at the midway point with 2,813 points.
The Lady Miners' contingent in the heptathlon was paced on day one by
Camille Baker (Knoxville, Tenn./Knoxville Catholic HS), who sits in second place with 2,697 points.
Anne Massey (St, Louis, Mo./Lindbergh HS) is third with 2,618 points and
Natalie Schriever (Sullivan, Mo./Sullivan HS) is in fourth place with 2,598.
Baker tied for the best mark in the high jump as she cleared 5-2¼ along with Massey, while taking third in the 100-meter hurdles at 15.56 seconds.
Besides her high jump performance, Massey had the second-best time in the 100-meter hurdles of 15.33 seconds, while Schriever's best finish came in the 200-meters where she was second to William Jewell's Margaret Perko in 26.16 seconds.
Perko leads the heptathlon after four events with 2,962 points.
The multi-event portion of the GLVC Championships concludes Friday, while the overall competition will get underway during the course of the day.
