ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's swimming team took part in its final competition prior to the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championships Friday evening and lost to Missouri State in a very fast meet in the pool
131.5-72.5.
Friday's meet saw seven times fall under the previous pool record for those events at Missouri S&T, two of them coming from Miner swimmers in winning performances.
Keith Sponsler (Lincoln, Neb./Lincoln East) set the new facility standard in the 200-yard freestyle with his time of 1:41.69, while
Miguel Chavez (Chihuahua, Mexico/Colegio de Bachilleres) broke the old mark in the 200-yard breaststroke by more than two seconds as he recorded a time of 2:01.89.
The Miners' third event win Friday came from
Aljaz Kerc (Ljubljana, Slovenia/Gimnazija Bezigrad) in the 50-yard freestyle, where he won in a time of 21.24 seconds.
S&T got second place showings from
Jon Glaser (Wildwood, Mo./Lafayette) in the 1,000-yard freestyle in 9:29.59 and 100-freestyle in 46.82 seconds,
Eirik Nielsen (Stathelle, Norway/Toppidrettsgynmaset) in the 200-yard individual medley in 1:51.94 and
Caleb Hathaway (North Little Rock, Ark./Central Arkansas Christian) in the 200-yard butterfly in 1:56.91.
The second place marks recorded by Glaser in the 1,000-free and Nielsen in the 200-IM also fell below the previous pool record times as new marks were set in five events in all.
The Miners' 200-yard medley relay team of
Ryan Layne (Houston, Texas/Cypress Creek), Chavez, Nielsen and Sponsler also took second in 1:32.98.
Third place showings were recorded by Layne in the 200-IM in 1:55.47,
Jon Anderson (Allentown, Pa./Salisbury Senior) in the 100-freestyle in 47.58 seconds, while
Caleb Hathaway (North Little Rock, Ark./Central Arkansas Christian) tied for third in the 50-freestyle with a time of 22.11 seconds. S&T also had a third place finish officially in the 200-freestyle relay – the quartet of
Nate Endebrock (Colbert, Wash./Riverpoint Academy),
Chris Lohff (Powder Springs, Ga./Hillgrove),
Mike Rouleau (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) and Chavez finished in 1:30.27 – as the Miners' top team in the event was disqualified.
The GLVC Championships, which will take place in Crawfordsville, Ind., will begin Feb. 11.
