ROLLA, Mo. -- After coming from behind twice in the completion of a suspended game Saturday with Rockhurst, Missouri S&T ended up losing
9-8 in eight innings to the Hawks in that contest and later suffered a second defeat by the score of
6-3 at the S&T Baseball Field.
The Miners trailed 2-0 in the game that was suspended after the completion of the third inning Friday, then saw the deficit grow to 5-0 after Drew Daubman homered in the fourth and Ryan Porter hit a two-run homer to the opposite field an inning later. But the Miners answered right back, scoring six times in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead.
After a leadoff walk to
Matt Kempin (Wichita, Kan./Trinity Academy),
Zac Helton (Ballwin, Mo./Marquette) reached on a two-base error when Rockhurst centerfielder Tom Stevison dropped a fly ball.
Brandon Cogan (Missouri City, Texas/Hightower) followed with a single to score both runners, then
Hunter Scheib (Lawrence, Kan./Free State) doubled down the line in left.
Will Morrison (Rolla, Mo./Rolla) followed with a single to drive in Cogan, then
Ben Pieper (O'Fallon, Mo./St. Dominic) blasted a three-run homer to close the rally.
However, Rockhurst took the lead right back in the sixth by scoring three unearned runs. An error on a sacrifice bunt attempt led to the Hawks loading the bases with nobody out, then a hit by Porter and another error on the play allowed Rockhurst to regain the lead.
Hawk reliever Kirk Huismann entered the game in the bottom of the sixth after a leadoff double by
Matt Kempin (Wichita, Kan./Trinity Academy) and retired the first five hitters he faced. Pieper got a hit on a full count pitch to keep the inning alive, then
Zach Carter (Perkins, Okla./Perkins-Tryon) homered over the fence in center to tie the score and force extra innings.
The Miners were an out away from escaping a jam in the eighth, but Austin Greer delivered a single to drive in the go-ahead run. S&T got two runners on base in the bottom half, but Mark Sappington entered the game for Rockhurst and got a strikeout to end it.
S&T outhit Rockhurst 12-10 in the game, with Cogan getting three hits and driving in two. Pieper had two hits and drove in three with his home run.
David Birkby (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway West), the third of four Miner pitchers used in the game, took the loss for S&T.
In the scheduled contest Saturday, the Miners grabbed the lead in the second by executing a double steal for the second time in the series;
Sam Adams (Forsyth, Mo./Forsyth) scored on the back end to put S&T in front. But Rockhurst tied the game in the third on an RBI single by Porter, then took the lead moments later when Ben Baker hit a three-run homer.
The Hawks scored two more runs off S&T pitcher
Chris Bowe (Rolla, Mo./Rolla) in the fourth. The Miners tallied single runs in the fourth on an RBI double by Morrison and in the seventh when Carter scored on an infield out.
S&T had just four hits -- two coming from Carter -- in the game.
The fourth game of the series with Rockhurst -- a nine-inning game -- will be played at a later date.
S&T's next scheduled game is slated for Wednesday when the Miners host Central Missouri.
