Miners open critical GLVC baseball series by splitting with Quincy

4/26/2010 8:46:00 PM

ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T opened a critical four-game series with Quincy Monday by shutting out the Hawks 11-0, but Quincy turned the tables in the second game of the twinbill by knocking off the Miners 9-1 at the S&T Baseball Field.
With those results and Rockhurst's split of its doubleheader with Missouri-St. Louis Monday, the Great Lakes Valley Conference's West Division standings remain the same with Quincy holding a 1 1/2-game lead over S&T and Rockhurst for third place and the last guaranteed playoff spot from the division. The Miners and Hawks will play the final two games of the series Tuesday at 1 p.m.
The Miners appeared to be in some early trouble in the opener as the Hawks' first three hitters reached to load the bases with nobody out. However, S&T starter Caleb Lambert (Romulus, Mich./Inter-City Baptist) retired the next three hitters – one coming when Zach Carter (Perkins, Okla./Perkins-Tryon) reached over the rail of the Miner dugout to haul in a foul ball -- without anyone crossing the plate and put together his strongest outing of the year with an eight-hit , complete game shutout.
S&T got Lambert all the runs he needed in the third inning. After Tim Kerouac (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bishop McNamara) walked with one out, Brandon Cogan (Missouri City, Texas/Hightower) reached on an infield single and Drew Davenport (McHenry, Ill./McHenry West) blooped a single to center to load the bases. Will Morrison (Rolla, Mo./Rolla) followed by drilling a single to left to bring in the first run of the contest.
Moments later, Cogan came in to score on a wild pitch, then after a walk to Carter, Matt Kempin (Wichita, Kan./Trinity Academy) reached on an error to bring home the third run of the inning. Another wild pitch followed to allow Morrison to score.
S&T added runs in the fifth as Cogan scored when Carter reached on a fielder's choice and again in the sixth when Louie Joseph (Bloomington, Ill./Central Catholic) executed a successful suicide squeeze.
Kempin hit a two-run homer in the seventh, then the Miners added three more in the eighth, two scoring on a double by Tim Kerouac (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bishop McNamara) and the last on Morrison's fifth hit of the game as he broke the S&T single-season record for hits as he closed the afternoon with 68 hits on the year.
Meanwhile, Lambert held the Hawks in check as he scattered eight hits and struck out three to record his first collegiate shutout. S&T had 12 hits in the game, with Cogan getting two to go along with Morrison's five. Cogan, who now has 66 hits on the year, also surpassed the old single-season standard of 65 that was set by Eaf Redden (Gunter, Texas/Gunter) a year ago.
But in the second game, the Miners were shut down by Hawk starter Brett Zurliene as he fired a two-hitter at them and retired 16 consecutive batters in one stretch.
Quincy took the lead in the second on a three-run homer off the bat of Fabian Oeschsle, then after the Miners scored in the bottom half of the inning on a double steal that saw Carter cross the plate, the Hawks tacked on two more in the fifth off S&T starter David Birkby (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway West).
The Hawks (25-18, 12-13 GLVC) busted the game open in the sixth with a four-run outburst, with the big blow being a two-run triple by Brandon England.
Carter and Kempin had the only hits for the Miners (16-30, 11-15 GLVC), both of which came to start the second inning. The next 16 Miners were retired in order after Kempin's hit, a streak that ended when Carter drew a walk in the seventh.
