Miners take series opener over Rockhurst; Game 2 suspended to Saturday

4/2/2010 7:18:04 PM

ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T took the first game of its weekend series with Rockhurst Friday, taking an 8-6 decision over the Hawks, and now is set for a long afternoon of baseball Saturday at the S&T Baseball Field after game two was suspended due to darkness.
Rockhurst leads the second game 2-0 after three innings and that game will be completed beginning at 11 a.m. Saturday morning prior to the scheduled doubleheader between the teams.
In the first game Friday, the Miners spotted Rockhurst an unearned run in the first inning before tallying four runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Brandon Cogan (Missouri City, Texas/Hightower) led off with a hit and stole second, then Hunter Scheib (Lawrence, Kan./Free State) drew a walk. After the two runners were moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt, Ben Pieper (O'Fallon, Mo./St. Dominic) singled to the opposite field to score Cogan. Zach Carter (Perkins, Okla./Perkins-Tryon) followed with a sacrifice fly to bring home Scheib.
Sam Adams (Forsyth, Mo./Forsyth) singled down the line in right to send Pieper to third, then took second on a wild pitch. Matt Kempin (Wichita, Kan./Trinity Academy) singled past short to score Pieper, then started a double steal that allowed Adams to score the fourth run of the inning.
The Miners answered a Rockhurst run in the top of the third with one in the bottom half when Kempin doubled to drive in Pieper, then added two more in the fourth. Cogan led off with a triple to the fence in center and scored on a ground out by Scheib for the first run.
The second run came after Morrison doubled, moved to third on a hit by Pieper and scored on a fielder's choice.
S&T scored its eighth run in the sixth when Morrison tripled to start the inning and came home on a double by Pieper.
The Miners had 13 hits in the contest, with Pieper collecting four and Cogan and Morrison three apiece. Six of S&T's 13 hits went for extra bases.
Caleb Lambert (Romulus, Mich./Inter-City Baptist) was the beneficiary of the offensive support as he evened his record at 3-3 with an eight-inning effort on the mound.   He recorded five strikeouts and was aided by two double plays. Zach Gronek pitched the ninth to pick up his second save.
Rockhurst scored its two runs in the suspended second game in the third inning on a two-run double by Mike Walczuk.
