ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T put eight runs on the board in the second inning and cruised to its fourth win in its last five contests with a
13-3 win over Fort Hays State Tuesday at the S&T Baseball Field.
The Miners' big outburst started with back-to-back hits by
Matt Kempin (Wichita, Kan./Trinity Academy) and
Zach Carter (Perkins, Okla./Perkins-Tryon) to start the inning. After they were moved up by a sacrifice bunt by
Sam Adams (Forsyth, Mo./Forsyth),
Louie Joseph (Bloomington, Ill./Central Catholic) dumped a single down the line in right to score both runners.
After the Miners loaded the bases moments later,
Hunter Scheib (Lawrence, Kan./Free State) drilled a ball past the second baseman to bring home Joseph and
Grant Brasher (Bridgeton, Mo./DeSmet Jesuit), then Cogan scored on the play when the relay throw went by the third baseman.
Will Morrison (Rolla, Mo./Rolla) followed with a double to score Scheib, then
Ben Pieper (O'Fallon, Mo./St. Dominic) hit a two-run homer to close the scoring in the inning.
Drew Pyles (White Lake, Mich./West Bloomfield) had a solid outing on the hill for the Miners, getting double plays in both the third and fourth innings to help get out of trouble. Pyles scattered 10 hits over six innings, but gave up only one run which came in his final inning of work.
S&T added onto its lead in the fourth, as Carter drove in one run with an RBI single and another scored on a wild pitch.
After the Tigers cut the Miner lead to 10-3 in the seventh on Nash Smith's two-run homer, S&T ended the game with three runs in the bottom half of the inning. The Miners got their 11
th run when
Tim Kerouac (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bishop McNamara) scored on a double off the bat of
Brandon Cogan (Missouri City, Texas/Hightower), scoring when the left fielder bobbled the ball during the play.
The last two runs scored when Carter doubled off the fence in center with the bases loaded, which brought home Cogan and Morrison.
S&T had 14 hits in game, four of which came from Carter as he also drove in three. Cogan and Kempin had three hits apiece for the Miners (6-13), who will face the Tigers (12-5) again Wednesday in another single game at 3 p.m.
