ROLLA, Mo. — Missouri S&T swept a conference doubleheader vs Illinois Springfield on Saturday at the Ballpark at S&T, earning a 7-4 win in the opener before completing the sweep with a 10-4 victory in game two.
Game 1: Miners 7, Prairie Stars 4
Game one belonged to
Jake Schisler (Quincy, IL/Quincy Notre Dame), who turned in one of the Miners' most complete outings of the season. The right-hander tossed a full nine innings, becoming the first Missouri S&T pitcher to throw a nine-inning complete game since Dylan Mollett accomplished the feat in 2024. Schisler worked efficiently throughout the afternoon, limiting Illinois Springfield to four runs while keeping the Prairie Stars off the scoreboard over the final six innings to secure the win. Schisler also retired the Prairie Stars in order six times during the game.
The Missouri S&T offense provided early support with a two-run first inning while
Drew Baugus (Kirkwood, MO/Kirkwood) contributed a single. After giving up three runs in the second and a fourth in the third, the Miners found themselves trailing 4-2. They drew even in the bottom of the third though, getting a double from
Garrett Meyer (Jacksonville, IL/Jacksonville) and a two-RBI single from
Caleb Horsey (Springdale, AR/Springdale).
Doubles from
Bricen Smith (Perry, GA/Mount de Sales Academy) and
Will Beckham (Mountain Home, AR/Mountain Home) helped the Miners push ahead 7-4 in the bottom of the fourth, with the team totaling 4 hits in the inning. The final five innings were a pitchers battle, with Schisler holding on to earn the Miners their 16th consecutive win.
Game 2: Miners 10, Prairie Stars 4
Both teams scored a run in the opening inning of game two, with the Miners' coming after a double by Meyer. The Miners added another pair of runs in the bottom of the second after singles by Horsey and Meyer. They were able to add an extra three runs in the inning Illinois Springfield's left fielder dropped a fly ball that should have been the third out. UIS was forced to pull their starting pitcher despite him having not even completed two full innings.
The Prairie Stars hit a trio of singles in the top of the third but only brought home one run. S&T would restore their five-run lead in their next turn at the plate, getting singles from
Will Muench (Wentzville, MO/Timberland) and
Keaton Scott (Hannibal, MO/Hannibal) to set up a run on a sac fly by Baugus.
On the mound,
Dylan Bates (O'Fallon, MO/Fort Zumwalt West) added another milestone performance to his season. In the fourth inning, Bates struck out Parker Heistand for the 100th strikeout of his career, doing so in a three-strikeout inning. Later in the outing, Bates secured his seventh victory of the season, making him the first Missouri S&T pitcher since 2019 to reach seven wins in a single year.
Meyer delivered one of the biggest swings of the afternoon in the fifth inning, launching a three-run home run to left field that helped extend the Miners' advantage and swing the momentum firmly in their favor, allowing them to hold on for a 10-4 victory.
Meyer led the offense in the doubleheader, totaling 5 hits in seven at bats while adding 5 RBIs. Horsey also had a solid showing at the plate, reaching base in six of seven plate appearances.
The Miners now lead the Great Lakes Valley Conference standings with a 16-2 conference record and hold a 17-game winning streak that is the second longest active streak in Division II.
