Six in sixth allow Miners to win suspended game over Rangers

3/15/2010 6:39:03 PM

ROLLA, Mo. – It may have taken over 48 hours from start to finish, but Missouri S&T's baseball team completed its sweep over Wisconsin-Parkside by using a six-run outburst in the sixth inning to win a suspended game over the Rangers 11-5 at the S&T Baseball Field.
S&T had a 5-4 lead after five innings when the game was suspended Saturday due to darkness, then the Rangers tied the game in the top of the sixth when Dave Watson tripled home a run. However, the Miners took advantage of some wildness by Ranger reliever Mike Bjerke to take the lead right back in the bottom half of the inning, scoring all six runs after two were out.
Bjerke hit Zac Helton (Ballwin, Mo./Marquette) to start the frame, then after advancing on a passed ball and getting bunted over to third, Brandon Cogan (Missouri City, Texas/Hightower) was hit by a pitch. With two outs, another passed ball allowed Helton to score the go-ahead run before Bjerke issued a walk to Will Morrison (Rolla, Mo./Rolla).
Ben Pieper (O'Fallon, Mo./St. Dominic) followed by hitting a three-run homer on a ball that Ranger centerfielder Paul Pulera had momentarily, but lost after crashing into the fence.
S&T added two more runs later in the inning on a wild pitch that scored Matt Kempin (Wichita, Kan./Trinity Academy) and an error that allowed Zach Carter (Perkins, Okla./Perkins-Tryon) to come around to score.
The Rangers scored single runs in each of the first four innings Saturday to take a 4-1 lead before S&T tied the game in the fourth. The Miners, who got their first run on a sacrifice fly by Pieper in the opening inning, scored twice on a hit by Drew Davenport (McHenry, Ill./McHenry West) that eluded Pulera in center, allowing Carter and Helton to cross the plate.
S&T knotted the score on a sacrifice fly by Hunter Scheib (Lawrence, Kan./Free State), then took the lead in the fifth before the game was halted when Kempin tripled with two outs and scored on a hit by Carter.
The Miners finished the game with 12 hits, three of which came from Carter to complete a weekend in which he hit .588 (10-of-17) in the four games. Pieper drove in four runs in the game for S&T, who improved to 5-13 overall and 3-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
Helton, who entered the game in the sixth inning, was credited with the win on the mound.
S&T will host Fort Hays State on Tuesday and Wednesday; Tuesday's contest will start at 3 p.m.
