Miners finish Arkansas weekend by splitting with Northwest Missouri

2/21/2010 10:18:46 PM

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Missouri S&T completed its second weekend trip of the season to Arkansas by splitting a doubleheader Saturday, beating Northwest Missouri State 4-3 in 11 innings in the opener before being blanked 5-0 in the nightcap.

A pair of Rolla High School products played prominent roles in the first game victory, as sophomore Will Morrison (Rolla, Mo./Rolla) delivered a game-winning double in the bottom of the 11th to make Chris Bowe (Rolla, Mo./Rolla), a freshman, the winning pitcher after he threw 4 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.

The Miners spotted Northwest a run in the first, then tied the game in the third on a sacrifice fly by Matt Kempin (Wichita, Kan./Trinity Academy). The contest remained tied until the sixth when S&T got back-to-back home runs with two outs from Hunter Scheib (Lawrence, Kan./Free State) and Brandon Cogan (Missouri City, Texas/Hightower) to take a 3-1 lead into the seventh.

However, a pair of errors by the Miners in that seventh inning helped lead to two unearned runs for the Bearcats to tie the game and send the game to extra innings.

Bowe entered the game after Northwest tied the score and got a strikeout and ground out to end the seventh, then allowed just one hit over the next four innings. The Miners were able to get him the victory in the 11th after Scheib drew a leadoff walk and came around to score when Morrison delivered a double with two outs.

Scheib and Ben Pieper (O'Fallon, Mo./St. Dominic) had two hits apiece for S&T, who outhit Northwest 8-6 in game one.

In the nightcap, the Bearcats broke on top in the fifth when a run scored on an error, then Northwest added another run in the sixth and three unearned runs in the seventh. S&T had only two hits off Jeremy Tate as he threw a complete game for the Bearcats (1-6).

Nick Johnson (St. Charles, Mo./Duchesne) took the loss on the mound for the Miners (2-6), who return to action Wednesday with a doubleheader at Arkansas Tech.
