Miner baseball team suffers sweep at hands of Henderson State

2/19/2010 7:52:49 PM

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Missouri S&T's baseball team returned to the field in Arkansas Friday and ran into a hot Henderson State team, with the end result being a doubleheader sweep by the Reddies by scores of 5-2 and 4-0.

The Reddies, who extended their winning streak to eight games with the sweep, jumped on top in the opener in the fourth inning by scoring twice off S&T starter Andrew Page (Stoney Creek, Ont./Cardinal Newman).

S&T knotted the score in the fifth, as Zac Helton (Ballwin, Mo./Marquette) singled with one out and Hunter Scheib (Lawrence, Kan./Free State) drew a two-out walk to precede a two-run double off the bat of Brandon Cogan (Missouri City, Texas/Hightower).

However, Henderson regained the lead in the bottom half of the sixth. A leadoff walk and a hit batter got the rally started, then a bases-loaded single with one out broke the tie. Two more runs scored later in the inning on a fielder's choice, the latter run scoring on an throwing error as the Miners were trying to turn an inning-ending double play.

The Miners were held to five hits in the opener, while Page took the loss on the mound as he pitched into the sixth inning.

S&T continued to struggle for offense in the second game as it had only three hits against HSU starter Chase Cleveland in his complete game effort.

The Reddies (8-1) scored three of their runs early in the contest, tallying two in the first on a two-run homer by Gip Hendrix and another in the second when Lee Harris led off with a home run. Henderson State added another run in the sixth.

Drew Pyles (White Lake, Mich./West Bloomfield) suffered the loss as he gave up three runs in five innings. Cogan, Will Morrison (Rolla, Mo./Rolla) and Grant Brasher (Bridgeton, Mo./DeSmet Jesuit) had the hits for S&T.

The Miners (1-5) will face Northwest Missouri State in a doubleheader Saturday in Arkadelphia.
