Miner swimmers get five first place finishes in meet at Mizzou

COLUMBIA, Mo. --  Missouri S&T's swimming team returned to the pool Saturday afternoon and despite being on the short end of the score in the dual meet with the University of Missouri, had five first place finishes in the competition.
 
The first place finishes were recorded by Andrew Trowbridge (Arlington, Texas/Arlington) in the 1,000-yard freestyle, Andrew Schranck (Alton, Ill./Marquette Catholic) in the 200-yard butterfly, Zlatan Hamzic (Panceva, Serbia/Uros Predic) in the 200-yard breaststroke and Jeff Enge (Edmond, Okla./Edmond Memorial) in the 200-yard individual medley.
 
Trowbridge posted his top time of the season in the 1,000 of 9:35.46, while Schranck finished his winning effort in the 200-butterfly in 1:53.36 and Hamzic took his first place finish in a time of 2:06.07 in the 200-breaststroke. Enge won his event in 1:58.03.
 
S&T's 200-yard freestyle relay team of Hamilton Vernon (Omaha, Neb./Burke), Schranck, Sean Deegan (Kansas City, Mo./Park Hill) and David Sanchez-Turner (Madrid, Spain/Academic Torvell) also got a first place finish in the race with a time of 1:26.35.
 
Hamzic took second in the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 57.86 seconds as did Trowbridge in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:39.20 and Lemons in the 200-individual medley in 1:59.27.
 
Third place finishes from S&T came from Matt Welsh (Wildwood, Mo./Lafayette) in the 1,000-yard freestyle in 9:56.23, Sanchez-Turner in the 50-yard freestyle in 21.94 seconds and 100-freestyle in 47.88 seconds, Schranck in the 100-yard butterfly in 51.41 seconds, Trowbridge in the 200-IM in 1:59.89 and Enge in the 200-yard backstroke in 1:55.10.
 
The Miners' 200-yard medley relay team of Enge, Hamzic, Schranck and Sanchez-Turner posted a time of 1:35.79 to take third as S&T's top relay team in that race.
 
Danny Murphy (Houston, Texas/Cypress Creek) placed fourth in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:45.97 for S&T's top finish in that event and Enge did likewise in the 100-yard backstroke in 53.07 seconds.
 
The Miners' next meet will take place Friday and Saturday when they take part in the Washington University Invitational in St. Louis.
