Biography
2009-10: Landed All-America honors in four relay events...was part of S&T's 400-yard freestyle relay that placed fifth as well as the 200-medley relay and 200- and 800-freestyle relays...was part of the Miners' runner-up team in the 800-freestyle relay and third-place finisher in the 200-yard freestyle relay at the NSISC Championships...placed fifth individually in the 50-yard freestyle at the NSISC meet; best time of the year came at nationals of 20.96 seconds...also took 10th in the 200-freestyle in the NSISC with a time of 1:43.60 and 13th in the 100-free.
2008-09: Earned All-America honors as part of all three of S&T’s freestyle relay teams…led off the Miner quartets at the national meet in the 200- and 800-free relays and helped both to record times…200-free relay team posted a time of 1:21.50 and a sixth-place finish, while the 800-free team finished seventh in 6:42.12…400-free relay took seventh overall…also competed at the national meet in the 50-, 100- and 200-yard freestyle…had top times of 20.41 in the 50-free (leadoff leg of the 200-free relay at nationals), 45.52 in the 100 and 1:41.50 in the 200.
PERSONAL: Son of Joe and Kelly Vernon…earned two conference most valuable player awards at the high school level…won the league title in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events in a year when he took second in both at the Nebraska state meet. He posted a time of 21.33 seconds in the finals in the 50-free and 47.27 in the 100-free. During the season, he had the state's best time in the 100-freestyle and second-best mark in the 50-free…majoring in biochemistry.
