(Rolla, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Miners dropped both ends of a doubleheader against Southern Indiana
15-2 and
8-7 on Tuesday afternoon in Rolla.
The Miners (13-29, 6-9 GLVC) got leads in both games on Tuesday. In the opener, S&T got on the board in the second inning when Zach Carter singled back up the middle to drive in Eaf Redden (Gunter, Texas/Gunter) from second. After a walk to Tim Kerouac (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bishop McNamara) put runners at first and second with one out, the Miners were unable to do further damage as strike out and a fly out to center ended the frame.
Southern Indiana (32-11, 12-4 GLVC) tied the game in the third courtesy of a double, a wild pitch and a single to center. Brandon Cogan (Missouri City, Texas/Hightower) was able keep the game tied though getting a double play to end the inning.
S&T regained the lead in the bottom of the frame getting a two out RBI single to left by Redden scoring Cogan from second. The Screaming Eagles though tied the game in the fourth with a double to left before taking the lead on a wild pitch.
The Miners missed a scoring chance in the fourth when they were unable to successfully move the runners on a bunt with nobody out then left the runners stranded when Andrew Vance (Stilwell, Kan./Blue Valley ) popped up to second and Cogan struck out swinging.
The Eagles put the game away scoring 12 runs in the final three innings, including six in the seventh, for the win.
S&T finished the game with four hits getting two of those from Redden. Carter and Cogan had the other two.
Cogan suffered the loss allowing seven runs, all earned, on 10 hits while striking out four and walking two in 4.2 innings of work.
In the nightcap, the Miners jumped out to a 4-0 lead after two innings. They scored their first run in the first on an RBI single to left from Cody Bass (Chattanooga, Okla./Chattanooga). In the second inning S&T took advantage of some control issues by the USI pitchers. Zac Helton (Ballwin, Mo./Marquette) started things off with a one out ground rule double to center. After a wild pitch moved him to third, Kerouac walked and Grant Johnson (LaSalle, Ill./St. Bede Academy) was hit by a pitch loading the bases.
Louie Joseph (Bloomington, Ill./Central Catholic) singled to right to bring home Helton then back-to-back walks to Drew Davenport (McHenry, Ill./McHenry West) and Thomas McCormick (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) forced in the next two runs. With the bases still loaded Redden grounded into fielder's choice to the third baseman for the second out then Bass struck out swinging to end the threat.
Miner starter Drew Pyles (White Lake, Mich./West Bloomfield) was cruising into the fourth inning retiring the first 10 hitters he faced before he encountered his own wildness walking a couple of a batters then throwing a wild pitch to move both runners up to second and third with two outs.
He almost got of the jam though getting Chad Werry to strike out swinging but the ball got away from Davenport then his throw got away from Helton allowing the first run to score. After another walk loaded the bases, Pyles hit Kyle Rowley to force in the second run. Brad Mangold then hit a dribbler up the first base line for a single and the subsequent throwing error by Helton allowed the tying runs to score.
USI took the lead on a two run double to left center off the bat of Royle Beach. S&T had a chance to tie the game in the fourth getting two on with one out but a fly out and ground out ended the threat.
The Miners retook the lead in the fifth getting an RBI single from Kerouac down the left field line to make it 6-5. With runners at second and third Joseph reached on an error when the first baseman couldn't hang on to a throw allowing Kerouac and Helton to score the go-ahead runs. They were unable to add any more though as a strikeout by McCormick ended the inning with runners on the corner.
Southern Indiana tied the game back up in the sixth on a groundout to second. After a scoreless seventh and eighth innings, the Eagles scored the go-ahead run in the ninth on a ground out to second with nobody out. S&T then was retired in order in the ninth ending the game.
Alex Dunn (Independence, Mo./Truman) took the loss in relief giving up a run on two hits in his one inning of work. Bass finished the game with three hits. Joseph, Davenport and Helton each had two apiece. Helton and Kerouac combined to score four of the seven runs.
S&T returns to action this weekend with a four game series at Rockhurst beginning on Friday evening at 6 p.m. in Kansas City, Mo.
