Miner baseball team splits pair at William Woods

3/4/2009 10:38:09 PM

FULTON, Mo. – Missouri S&T got a strong pitching effort from junior Brandon Cogan (Missouri City, Texas/Hightower) Wednesday as he allowed only three hits and one in five innings of work, helping the Miners to a 5-1 win in the first game of a doubleheader at William Woods. The Owls took game two 5-2 despite two hits from S&T's Eaf Redden (Gunter, Texas/Gunter) and Cody Bass (Chattanooga, Okla./Chattanooga) in the nightcap.

Cogan also struck out seven in his start and allowed only a solo home run to Tyler Tamayose to lead off the fourth. In the meantime, the Miner offense got him two runs to work with in the third, then added a single tally in the fifth to get the two-run lead back and two more in the seventh.

The Miner third started out with a  hit by Tim Kerouac (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bishop McNamara) and a walk to Matt Grundmann (Grafton, Ill./Jersey Community). Following a sacrifice bunt by Andrew Vance (Stilwell, Kan./Blue Valley ), Louie Joseph (Bloomington, Ill./Central Catholic) hit into a fielder's choice as Kerouac was cut down at the plate. Joseph went to second on the play, then Redden followed with a two-run single to give the Miners a 2-0 advantage.

After Tamayose's home run cut the lead in half, the Miners got the run back in the fifth on a two-out single by Bass that scored Redden.

S&T tacked on two insurance runs in the seventh after Joseph reached on an error to start the inning. Redden followed with a hit, then two wild pitches allowed Joseph to score. Moments later, Redden came home on another RBI single by Bass.

Redden, Bass and Zac Carter (Perkins, Okla./Perkins-Tryon) all had two hits apiece for S&T in game one as the Miners finished with nine. Zach Gronek picked up a save with two innings of relief work, allowing two hits and striking out three as the two Miner hurlers finished the game with 10 strikeouts.

In the nightcap, the Miners grabbed the early lead on Zac Helton (Ballwin, Mo./Marquette)'s homer to start the second inning, but the Owls answered by scoring twice in their half of the second off starter Drew Pyles (White Lake, Mich./West Bloomfield). William Woods extended its lead with three more runs in the fourth before S&T got one of the runs back in the sixth.

After Helton reached on an error to start the frame, Hunter Scheib (Lawrence, Kan./Free State) got a hit with one out and Louie Joseph (Bloomington, Ill./Central Catholic) reached on an error to load the bases. Cogan singled to bring home Helton, but the rally ended there as S&T left the bases loaded for the second time in the game.

Redden and Bass had two hits again in the second game for the Miners (5-8), who will return to action Friday at the Heffington Optical Classic at Meador Park in Springfield, Mo.
