Thursday's results
CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. – For the second consecutive night,
Jon Glaser (Wildwood, MO/Lafayette) took home a Great Lakes Valley Conference championship and Missouri S&T remained in second place in the team standings at the midway point of the GLVC Swimming & Diving Championships.
After winning the 50-yard freestyle on Wednesday, Glaser captured the 200-freestyle in a school and conference record time by posting a winning mark of 1:35.42 to edge Indianapolis' Giulherme Zavaneli by 0.46 seconds. The time also made the automatic NCAA Division II qualifying time, making him the first Miner to do that this season.
Glaser trailed in the race with 50 yards to go, but swam a 24.26 over the final leg to overtake Zavaneli to win the 10
th GLVC title in his career.
S&T also got a second place performance from its 200-yard freestyle relay team of
Chris Betts (Katy, TX/Cinco Ranch),
Morgan Meyer (Ruston, LA/Ruston),
Max Grogan (Parker, CO/Legend) and
Marcin Glebocki (Kansas City, MO/Park Hill), who finished within a second of Drury with a time of 1:21.61.
In the final event of the night, the Miners finished third in the 400-yard medley relay with
Ethan Shih (Papillion, NE/Papillion-LaVista),
Miguel Chavez (Chihuahua, Mexico/Colegio de Bachilleres),
Eirik Nielsen (Stathelle, Norway/Toppidrettsgynmaset) and Glaser recording a time of 3:15.40.
The Miners had three among the top eight in the 100-yard butterfly, led by Nielsen's fourth place finish in 48.76 seconds. Meyer finished right behind him in 49.10 seconds and
Aaron Taske (Fairfield, OH/Saint Xavier) was eighth in 49.87.
The Miners' second 200-free relay team also came in second in the B-final with the team of
Colten Becker (Overland Park, KS/Blue Valley Northwest),
John-Martin Schmidt (Topeka, KS/Hayden), Chavez and
Kevin McPherson (Oakdale, MN/Tartan) posting a time of 1:24.83, as did the second 400-medley relay team of Mossop,
Max Middendorf (Hudsonville, MI/Hudsonville), Taske and Betts in 3:23.27.
S&T also got scoring performances Thursday from Shih in the 100-butterfly in a time of 49.50 seconds that made an NCAA provisional qualifying mark,
Stuart Mossop (Houston, TX/James E. Taylor) and
Matt Wagner (Kansas City, MO/Park Hill) in the 400-yard individual medley, Betts in the 100-butterfly as well as McPherson,
Jared Dachroeden (St. Louis, MO/Parkway North) and Schmidt in the 200-freestyle.
Drury continues to hold the lead in the team standings with 407 points and the Miners are second with 342.5, 84 points in front of third place UIndy and over 100 over the rest of the field.
The meet continues Friday with competition in five events.
