S&T to welcome UIndy, Lewis to Gibson Arena this weekend

ROLLA, Mo. – After snapping a four-game losing streak with a win at McKendree on Saturday, Missouri S&T's men's basketball team will take on two of the top teams in the Great Lakes Valley Conference over the course of the weekend at Gibson Arena.

The Miners, 10-8 overall and 4-7 in the GLVC, will face conference co-leader Indianapolis Thursday in a game that will get underway at 7:30 p.m., then host Lewis Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. to close out the two-game homestand.  Lewis is currently one game in back of UIndy and Upper Iowa in the standings after beating the former in overtime on Saturday.

S&T nearly made a up a 19-point second half deficit at Missouri-St. Louis on Thursday before falling 78-75, but won a game on Saturday at McKendree in which neither team led by more than six points.  Andrew Young (Ballwin, MO/Marquette) hit a three-point basket to break a 66-all tie with 2:24 to play, then held off the Bearcats in the final moments as McKendree was unable to get a shot off before the final buzzer sounded in the 75-73 win.

Ikenna Okeke (Bolingbrook, IL/Romeoville) scored a game-high 22 points to lead the Miners and enters play this week as the team's leading scorer with an average of 14.4 points per game.  He is among four double figure scorers for S&T, joining Julien Smith (Fort Worth, TX/Northwest) and Lovell Williams (Rogers, MN/Maple Grove) with averages of 12.9 points apiece and Kaden Froebe (Lincoln, IL/Lincoln) at 10.8 per game.  Young is just shy of the double figure mark at 9.5 per game, but leads S&T with 6.8 rebounds per game and 30 blocked shots.

Smith, who moved into sixth place on S&T's all-time scoring list on Saturday, has a team-leading 35 three-point baskets, while Froebe is on the cusp of 1,000 points as a Miner as his 16 on Saturday moved him to 991 in his career.

Williams and Young also rank among the GLVC leaders in various categories, with Williams sitting second in the league with an average of 4.9 assists per game (73 total) and fifth in steals with 26, while Young is sixth in rebounding and second in blocked shots.

ABOUT INDIANAPOLIS: The Greyhounds dropped into a tie for first place with Upper Iowa after falling 82-81 in overtime Saturday at Lewis, only the second loss in UIndy's last 12 games.  Jarvis Walker came off the bench to score 24 points to pace the Greyhounds while Paul Zilinskas, a transfer from GLVC rival Quincy had 19 as the loss dropped UIndy to 12-6 overall and 8-2 in conference play.

Jesse Bingham is scoring 15.1 points per game to lead the Greyhounds and also leads them in blocked shots with 25 and steals with 30, while Zilinskas is averaging 12.1 points with a team-high 46 assists.  UIndy's third double figure scorer is Kendrick Tchoua at 11.2 points per game and he is the top rebounder with 6.5 per contest.  The Greyhounds are shooting 35.2 percent from three-point range and have six players who have made at least 16 treys this season.

ABOUT LEWIS:  The Flyers pulled out the win over UIndy in overtime on a three-point basket by Devon Vanderheydt at the buzzer, which were his only points of the afternoon to push Lewis to 11-7 overall and 7-3 in the GLVC.  Lewis went 5-2 in the month of January – including a 96-74 win over the Miners on Jan. 3 in Romeoville, Ill. – and have won their last three outings coming into their game Thursday at Maryville.

Beau Frericks, who missed the first matchup between the teams, leads the Flyers with an average of 16.5 points per game that ranks fourth in the GLVC.  Jamere Hill and Gary Solomon are both averaging 11.1 per game and Ryan Renfro owns averages of 9.7 points and a team-leading 7.1 rebounds per game while shooting 58.2 percent from the field.  Hill has 56 assists to lead the way in that department and Solomon has made 20 steals.
