ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's men's basketball team returns to Great Lakes Valley Conference play for good this week as it will play twice and look to extend its season-high four-game winning streak in the process.
The Miners, who got their fourth win in succession Saturday with an 89-62 win over Principia at Gibson Arena, will head to the road for the first time since mid-November on Wednesday to take on Lewis in a 7:30 p.m. game in Romeoville, Ill., before returning to Gibson Arena Saturday to face McKendree at 3 p.m.
S&T had five players in double figures in Saturday's win, led by
Ikenna Okeke (Bolingbrook, IL/Romeoville) and
Andrew Young (Ballwin, MO/Marquette) with 14 points apiece. The Miners shot 53 percent from the field and broke the game open by outscoring the Panthers 28-6 to close the first half in improving to 8-2 on the season, matching its best start since the 2014-15 season when it was also 8-2.
Okeke is among three double figure scorers for the Miners heading into play this week with an average of 13.6 points per game and also has a team-leading 6.4 rebounds per contest.
Lovell Williams (Rogers, MN/Maple Grove) leads the way in the scoring column with a mark of 15.3 points per game, while
Julien Smith (Fort Worth, TX/Northwest) is averaging 13.7 points per outing.
Williams leads the Miners with 42 assists on the season, while Smith has 15 steals and a team-leading 23 three-point baskets. S&T is shooting 47.2 percent as a team from the field while holding its opponents to a 41.2 percent mark that ranks second in the GLVC, and is also second in the conference with an average of 83.4 points per game.
ABOUT LEWIS: The Flyers, 6-5 overall and 2-1 in the GLVC, picked up a big win Saturday in their return to play as they won 83-78 on the road over a Lake Superior State team that was receiving votes in the national poll. Lewis shot 64.4 percent in the victory and was paced by Beau Frericks with 22 points on a seven-of-nine day from the field.
Frericks leads the Flyers with an average of 15.5 points per game and is shooting 38 percent from three-point range, while Gary Solomon is scoring 13.2 points a game and is making 53.5 percent of his field goal attempts. The Flyers, who are also getting 11.8 points a game from Jamere Hill, are making 49.9 percent of their field goal attempts and are outrebounding their opponents by nearly five per game, led by Ryan Renfro's 7.5 per outing.
ABOUT McKENDREE: The Bearcats bring records of 7-3 overall and 2-2 in the GLVC into play this week, which includes a New Year's Day game with Baptist Bible and the resumption of conference play on Wednesday when they host Upper Iowa. McKendree won its last two games before the holiday break, the most recent an eight-point win over Grand Valley State on Dec. 17.
Milos Vicentic, a key piece to the Bearcats' late-season run to the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional championship game a year ago, ranks second in the GLVC in scoring with an average of 23.5 points per game and Caleb Zurliene is averaging 14.8 points per game. McKendree is shooting a league-leading 54 percent from the floor for the season, with Zurliene, Carson Parker and Vicentic all among the top seven in the conference in that category. Zurliene is also connecting on 48.4 percent of his three-point attempts.
