S&T's Swadley, Miltun named as GLVC Scholar-Athletes of Year

ROLLA, Mo. – Two individuals that shared Missouri S&T's Men's Student-Athlete of the Year Award have earned a major honor from the Great Lakes Valley Conference today, as Carl Miltun (Gilbert, AZ/Williams Field) of the golf team and Nathan Swadley (Willard, MO/Willard) from the men's track & field program have been selected as the Scholar-Athletes of the Year by the GLVC in their respective sports.

Swadley, who was named yesterday as the 2022-23 Academic All-America of the Year for NCAA Division II in men's track & field by the College Sports Communicators, earned the conference award for the third time in his career.  He was a four-time All-America performer for the Miners in the shot put, where he finished fifth at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships after placing sixth during the indoor season.

During his five seasons at S&T, Swadley -- a graduate student in mechanical engineering who used his fifth season granted to student-athletes after the 2020 season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic – won the GLVC shot put championship in both the indoor and outdoor seasons in 2023.  He finished his career with four shot put championships and six conference titles overall as he was named twice as the GLVC's Field Athlete of the Year in the sport.

Swadley completed his S&T career as the school record holder in the indoor and outdoor shot put as well as in the discus throw; he is the only competitor in program history to go past the 18-meter mark in the shot and the 52-meter mark in the discus.  He earned All-America honors at both 2022 national meets, finishing sixth in the indoor shot put and seventh outdoors.

His career accomplishments also extend to the classroom, where he is a three-time CSC Academic All-America selection and was the recipient of the GLVC's Richard F. Scharf Paragon Award following the 2021-22 season.   He has been a GLVC All-Academic team selection in every season, as well as a three-time recipient of the Brother James Gaffney Distinguished Scholar Award by the conference – given to those with a 4.0 grade point average for an entire academic year – and earned the GLVC Council of Presidents Academic Excellence Award in 2023.

Miltun is the first Miner golfer to earn the GLVC's Scholar-Athlete of the Year award and comes on the heels of a season that saw him earn CSC Academic All-America honors and medalist honors at the GLVC Championships for the second time in his career.  Miltun, who also had a first place finish at the Findlay Spring Invitational during the season, helped lead S&T to its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1969 as the team finished in a tie for eighth at the national tournament.

In earning his medalist honor, Miltun set new GLVC records in his winning performances as he posted a score of 203 to finish 13 shots under par and won the event by 10 strokes.  His second round score of 63, also the lowest in GLVC history, also tied the course record at Paradise Pointe Golf Course in Smithville, Mo.

Miltun, also a mechanical engineering major at Missouri S&T, would go on to finish fifth with an even par score of 213 at the NCAA Division II Central/Midwest Regional to lead S&T to a second place finish and a spot in the national tournament.  At the NCAA Division II Championships in Warren, Ohio, he finished in a tie for 14th place with an even par score of 216.

During the 2022-23 season, Miltun also finished second at the Tunica Cup in Mississippi and was third at the Hillcat Classic in Oklahoma.  In his 33 rounds of play during the year, he averaged 71.3 shots per round as he recorded five finishes among the top five, a sixth in the top 10 and four others among the top 20 in the fields he competed in.
