ROLLA, Mo. – A busy week of post-season events await Missouri S&T's athletic teams in the upcoming week, as two Miner squads will be taking part in NCAA Division II championship competition over the course of the week prior to Memorial Day.
The week will begin with Missouri S&T's golf team making its second-ever appearance at the NCAA Division II Championships, which will get underway Monday at Avalon Lakes Country Club in Warren, Ohio. The Miners earned their place in the national tournament after finishing second at the Central/Midwest Regional and will be making their first trip to the national event since finishing 12
th in 1969.
S&T's group of five will be headed by
Carl Miltun (Gilbert, AZ/Williams Field), an all-region performer who was the Great Lakes Valley Conference medalist and fifth place finisher at the regional meet. Miltun has averaged 71.2 shots per round this season and had five top-five finishes in tournaments, including a second medalist award at the Findlay Spring Invitational.
Jeppe Thybo (Esbjerg, Denmark/Rybners Gymnasium) and
Gustav Liljedahl (Uppsala, Sweden/Celsiusskolan), who like Miltun have played in all 30 rounds S&T has competed in this season, are both averaging just over 73 shots per round on the season, while Issac To is averaging 74.2 on the season in 25 rounds of play. The Miners' fifth player,
Cole Komyati (Fairhope, AL/Bayside Academy), has played in 24 rounds and averaged 75.7 shots for the year.
Missouri S&T will be paired up with Barry and Sonoma State in the first two rounds of play – S&T begins play Monday at 11:21 a.m. and Tuesday at 8:25 a.m. -- then the pairings will be reset heading into Wednesday's third round. If the Miners finish among the top eight in the stroke play standings after 54 holes, they will advance to match play which will take place Thursday and Friday.
On Thursday, the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships will get underway in Pueblo, Colo., and Missouri S&T will have two competitors taking part in that event in
Jacob Luebbert (Warsaw, MO/Warsaw) and
Nathan Swadley (Willard, MO/Willard).
Luebbert will compete first in the hammer throw on Thursday at 4:30 p.m., Central time, where he comes into the meet ranked fifth in the event during the outdoor season. It will be the second national appearance for Luebbert, who earned All-America honors with a fourth place finish in the weight throw during the NCAA's indoor championships in March.
Luebbert's best throw of the season was 210-5, which he recorded at the Dewey Allgood Invitational at S&T on April 22. He broke the school record in the event twice during the season and also captured the hammer throw competition at the Drake Relays before finishing second at the GLVC Championships in May.
Swadley will be capping a distinguished career in the Miner program with his sixth appearance on the national stage and will be looking to capture his fourth All-America award. The GLVC shot put champion during both the indoor and outdoor seasons, Swadley comes into the national meet ranked 10
th nationally with a top mark of 59-7½ that was posted at the Beach Invitational in California last month.
The throw at Long Beach State was just one-quarter of a inch off the school record he set a year ago at the NCAA Outdoor Championships when he finished seventh. In March, Swadley captured All-America honors in the shot put by finishing in sixth place. The men's shot put competition will take place Saturday at 6:05 p.m., Central time.
