ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's men's basketball team will play host to local and regional students in its final game before the holiday break, as it welcomes Health Sciences & Pharmacy to Gibson Arena on Education Day at S&T. Monday's game, which is sponsored by Kummer Center for STEM Education, will tip off at 11 a.m.
The Miners improved to 6-2 overall and 2-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference after winning twice last week, as they downed Baptist Bible 102-91 and Maryville 95-81. The offensive outburst upped their seasonal scoring average to 83.3 points per game, which ranks as the second-best mark in the GLVC heading into play this week.
Julien Smith (Fort Worth, TX/Northwest) and
Ikenna Okeke (Bolingbrook, IL/Romeoville) shared the team scoring lead in both games last week, as each had 20 points in the victory over Baptist Bible and then posted 21 apiece in Saturday's win over the Saints. Smith, who had a five-of-five day from three-point range against Maryville, leads the Miners with an average of 15.4 points per game while Okeke is scoring 14.4 per game.
Smith is seventh in the GLVC in scoring and
Lovell Williams (Rogers, MN/Maple Grove), who is averaging 15.3 per game, is ranked ninth in the scoring department. Smith is also second in the GLVC with 2.6 three-pointers per game, while Williams is second in assists with 42 on the year.
The Miners have a fourth double figure scorer in
Kaden Froebe (Lincoln, IL/Lincoln) at 10 points per game; he is also shooting 63.3 percent from the field to go along with 18 assists and seven steals.
Andrew Young (Ballwin, MO/Marquette) leads S&T with 12 blocked shots and 12 steals.
ABOUT UHSP: The Eutectics, who will be playing Monday's game as an exhibition contest, own a 1-9 record and have lost six games in succession after recording their only win on Nov. 11 against Central Christian. UHSP has allowed an average of 103.6 points per game, the second-highest average among the 226 teams playing in the NAIA ranks.
Landon Engelage leads the Eutectics with an average of 14.8 points per game, while Brady Bowers is scoring 14.7 per game and Jas Suvalija is at 13.5 entering Monday's contest. Suvalija has also connected 32 times from three-point range as UHSP has averaged 9.1 three-pointers per game. Opposing teams have made 51.8 percent of their field goal attempts on the season.
