BOLIVAR, Mo. – Missouri S&T's men's cross country team opened the 2022 season by getting both an individual and team victory at the Southwest Baptist Invitational, while the S&T women's team placed third in their opening competition of the campaign.
Hayes Pateidl (Overland Park, KS/Blue Valley West) navigated the four-mile course in a time of 20:01 to win the race by 21 seconds over College of the Ozarks' Tanner Bailey. Combined with the fourth place finish by
Andrew Lofgren (Chesterfield, MO/Parkway West) and four other finishers among the top 20 overall, the Miners were able to edge SBU and Drury in the team standings with the trio separated by just four points.
S&T finished with 43 points in the meet, while Southwest Baptist recorded 46 and Drury 47. SBU had four finishers among the top 13, but its fifth runner crossed the finish line after S&T's sixth runner had finished as did Drury's fifth runner in the race.
Pateidl's performance made him the first Miner to win a cross country race since Duncan Clark captured the top spot at the Bradley Pink Classic in October 2018. He was followed across the finish line by Lofgren, who took fourth in 20:31, and
Lucas Rackers (Florissant, MO/St. Louis University HS) in 15
th with a time of 20:54.
S&T's top five spots were completed by
Andrew Bacon (Webster Groves, MO/Webster Groves) in 17
th place in 21:07 and
Daniel Garrison (Liberty, MO/Liberty) in 18
th in 21:13.
Joshua Nunn (Independence, MO/Truman) was the sixth finisher for the Miners in 19
th place in 21:17 and his finish ahead of the fifth SBU and Drury finishers pushed the scores higher for both teams. The seventh Miner to cross the finish line was
Aaron Yocom (Highlands Ranch, CO/Mountain Vista) in 26
th place in a time of 21:36.
Missouri S&T's women were paced by
Victoria Regitz (Rockville, MD/Rockville), who finished ninth in the five-kilometer race in a time of 19:40.
Aubrie Caldwell (Dripping Springs, TX/Dripping Springs) ended up in 14
th in 20:07, while
Grace Giesler (Owasso, OK/Owasso) was three seconds behind her in 15
th place. S&T's top five were rounded out by
Clare Holmes (Camdenton, MO/Camdenton) in 18
th in 20:22 and
Emily Griesenauer (Wentzville, MO/Holt) in 20
th in 20:25.
The Miners' top seven was rounded out by
Emma Mueller (St. Louis, MO/Oakville) in 23
rd place in a time of 20:53 and
Megan Cook (Okawville, IL/Okawville), who placed 26
th in 21:10.
Drury runners, led by overall winner Bradley Weimer in 18:44, took the top three spots in the individual race, but Southwest Baptist competitors grabbed the next five spots in the standings and edged the Panthers by two points for the team title. The Miners recorded 72 points to finish third, well ahead of College of the Ozarks, in the seven-team meet.
Missouri S&T will return to action on Sept. 16 when it takes part in the Larry Young Invitational hosted by Columbia College.
