KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – Missouri S&T's
Luke Allen (Jefferson City, MO/Calvary Lutheran) earned a conference championship and the Miners posted 12 scoring performances Friday as they are in second place in the team standings through the second day of competition at the Great Lakes Valley Conference Outdoor Championships at Truman State.
Allen captured the long jump competition with a leap of 23-2 to edge Indianapolis' Trace Oswalt. He was one of three Miners to score in that event, as
Bailey Crone (Collinsville, IL/Collinsville) finished in fifth with his mark of 22-5¾ and
Dane Rodriguez (Barnhart, MO/Windsor) came in eighth at 22-1½.
The Miners also had a pair of second place finishes on Friday, one coming from
Nick Janke (Rolla, MO/Rolla) as he placed second in the decathlon with a total of 5,945 points. Janke had the top marks in the discus at 111-10 and javelin with a mark of 157-1 to put him into the lead prior to the final, but was overtaken in the 1,500-meters by William Jewell's Ryan Hoffman.
Jake Anderson (O'Fallon, MO/Fort Zumwalt West) placed fifth in the decathlon with 4,539 points.
The Miners also captured two of the top three spots in the discus, with
Garrett Miller (Kearney, MO/Kearney) finishing second with a throw of 16-01 and
Nathan Swadley (Willard, MO/Willard) taking third at 158-4. Miller and Swadley would add another top-eight finish later in the day in the hammer throw, as Miller took second at 188-3 and Swadley was fifth with a throw of 169-5.
The Miners' other scorers on Friday came in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, where
Duncan Clark (Kirksville, MO/Kirksville) finished fourth in 9:30.11 and
Wil Crutcher (Rolla, MO/Rolla) took eighth in 9:43.71 and in the pole vault, where
Joseph Nickell (Nixa, MO/Nixa) came in fourth by clearing 14-1¼.
In the preliminary rounds held on Friday,
Alex Staples (River Forest, IL/Oak Park River Forest) recorded the best time in the 800-meters of 1:54.30.
Through seven events, the Miners have recorded 64 points and trail meet leader Indianapolis by 24 heading into the final day of competition on Saturday. The Greyhounds and Miners are well ahead of the rest of the field through Friday, with Lewis currently in third place with 21.5 points.
