ROLLA, Mo. – Following a week where it went 4-1 on the field, Missouri S&T's baseball team will play one more non-conference game prior to the start of its Great Lakes Valley Conference schedule this weekend.
The Miners will head to Joplin, Mo. – where it picked up the first two of the four wins last week – to face Missouri Southern Wednesday afternoon at 1 p.m., before beginning its GLVC slate this weekend with a three-game series against William Jewell.
Weather has hampered the schedule significantly over the last two weeks, as the game with Southern was originally scheduled for Tuesday in Rolla but was moved to the artificial turf field at Missouri Southern on Wednesday to allow for the temperatures to improve. The series with William Jewell, meanwhile, is slated to take place in Liberty, Mo., with a doubleheader on Saturday at noon and a single game Sunday that will also begin at noon.
S&T took contests last week from Wisconsin-Parkside and 14
th-ranked St. Cloud State in Joplin, then won two-of-three from Saginaw Valley State in Jackson, Miss., to complete the week. In Saturday's opener against the Cardinals, the Miners put 17 runs on the scoreboard which was the most in a game in four seasons, highlighted by a six-RBI game by catcher
Brady Wildschuetz (Foristell, MO/Francis Howell).
Heading into the week, Wildschuetz is batting .375, second on the team to
Matt Gruse's (Neenah, WI/Neenah) .394 mark.
Tim Lira (Granger, IN/Penn) is hitting .344 and leads S&T with two home runs and 11 runs batted in, while
Zach Bracken (Berthoud, CO/Berthoud) is hitting .333 and
Cameron Burk (Nacogdoches, TX/Cushing) is at .313 with a .476 on-base percentage and a team-high four stolen bases.
Luke Marcheschi (Bloomington, IL/Central Catholic) has won all three of his starts on the mound for S&T and owns a 1.29 earned run average for the season, while
Dalton Erger (Imperial, MO/Seckman) is 2-1 with a 4.91 ERA and 15 strikeouts in 18 innings of work.
Missouri Southern is 11-5 on the season, but dropped the final two contests – both by one run – in its series against Missouri Western that snapped an eight-game winning streak. Dexter Swims leads the Lions with a .368 batting average, while Freddie Landers is hitting .304 and Denver Coffee comes into the contest at .302.
As a team, the Lions have already belted 13 home runs – three apiece by Landers and Ryan Hunter. On the hill, Southern has a 3.43 team ERA and is paced by Will Bausinger, who owns a 1.29 ERA and threw a perfect game earlier this season.
William Jewell is 5-5-1 heading into its conference opener on Saturday and has received the bulk of its offensive production from Nick Gavin, a .394 hitter and Anthony Hansen, who is hitting .375 on the season with a team-high eight runs batted in. Trent Bollman is also over the .300 mark with a .333 average.
Mack Stephenson has made four starters for the Cardinals and has a 1.64 earned run average with 28 strikeouts in 22 innings, while Reed Pegram has a 4.58 ERA in four appearances – including three starts – and 19 2/3 innings on the mound. No other Cardinal pitcher other than Kylan Easley has made more than one start.
