QUINCY, Ill. – After dropping a 9-0 decision in game one of Saturday's doubleheader at Quincy and letting a five-run lead with three outs to go slip out of its grasp, Missouri S&T's baseball team bounced back and took the second game of the twinbill 7-5 to gain a split of the Great Lakes Valley Conference contests at QU Stadium.
After the Hawks (24-12, 12-6 GLVC) put five runs on the board in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings, the Miners (18-19, 8-10 GLVC) got to Quincy closer Cole Crawford in the eighth to win the game.
With one out,
Drew Aldana (El Paso, TX/JM Hanks) singled to the opposite field and
Kaleb Reid (Smithville, MO/Smithville) was hit by a pitch.
Nathan Volkmann (Liberty, MO/Liberty), who got the start at third base in game two, singled to the opposite field himself to bring home Aldana with the go-ahead run. Moments later,
Jason Volkmann (Liberty, MO/Liberty) added to the S&T lead with a hit to score Reid.
Anthony Garza (Belleviille, IL/Belleville East) took over on the mound for S&T in the bottom of the eighth and retired the Hawks in order to preserve the win for
Conner Forsythe (Farmington, MO/Farmington).
The Miners carried a 5-0 lead into the seventh inning with
Dan Borek (Greenville, WI/Hortonville) – the recipient of the last two GLVC pitcher of the week awards – on the mound with a two-hitter in progress. However, the Hawks got their first three runners on base to start the seventh, scoring twice in the process and forcing the Miners to go to the bullpen.
With two outs in the inning and the Miners still holding a three-run lead, T.J. Tamaccio doubled home two runs and following a hit by Brynn Martinez, the Hawks executed a double steal to tie the contest.
S&T took the initial lead in the game in the third when J. Volkmann singled and later scored on a hit by
Matt Gruse (Neenah, WI/Neenah). The Miners added on to their advantage with two runs in the fifth, one driven home on a sacrifice fly by
Lucas Swindle (Weldon Spring, MO/Lutheran-St. Charles) and the other on a run-scoring double by Gruse with two outs.
In the sixth, the Miners added some cushion to their lead when Aldana singled with one out and Reid reached on a bunt single. The two runners moved up on a fly ball and a stolen base by Reid, which preceded a two-run single by
Jason Volkmann (Liberty, MO/Liberty) to make it 5-0.
The Miners outhit Quincy 10-8 in the nightcap, with J. Volkmann getting three hits and driving in three runs.
In the first game, the Hawks took the lead on a two-run double by Troy Wehde as part of a four-run third inning, then tacked on a single runs in the sixth and eighth innings sandwiched around a three-run seventh.
Hawk starter Riley Martin and a pair of relievers held the Miners to just three hits in game one, although the Miners were recipients of five walks and two hit batters in the contest.
Missouri S&T and Quincy will wrap up their weekend series with a noon doubleheader on Sunday.
