Miners nab three NCAA-II provisional mark at Arkansas

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Missouri S&T had top-three finishes from John Karsten (Jefferson City, MO/Blair Oaks HS) and Joe Bindner (St. Peters, MO/Fort Zumwalt East HS) and a trio of NCAA Division II provisional qualifying performances over the course of the weekend as the Miners and Lady Miners took part in the Arkansas Spring Invitational at the University of Arkansas.

Karsten finished in second place in the hammer throw as he recorded a mark of 192-2 that made an NCAA Division II provisional mark.  Bindner, meanwhile, finished third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:01.90.

The Miners also got fifth place finishes from JR Frisella in the 400-meters with a time of 48.23 seconds, Adam Kraus (Tulsa, OK/Thomas Edison Preparatory) in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 10:22.13 and Jarett Johnson (Webb City, MO/Webb City) in the javelin with a mark of 193-2 that also made an NCAA provisional mark

Ezekiel Buck (Elburn, IL/Geneva) finished in sixth in the pole vault as he cleared 15-9 -- which was S&T's third provisional mark set over the weekend -- while Dane Rodriguez (Barnhart, MO/Windsor) also had a sixth place showing in the long jump at 23-1¾ and in the triple jump at 44-6¼, one spot ahead of teammate Bailey Crone (Collinsville, IL/Collinsville), who posted a mark of 44-1¼.  Another sixth place performance came from Garrett Miller (Kearney, MO/Kearney) in the discus as he posted a mark of 151-10.

Karsten added a seventh place finish in the shot put with a mark of 50-3½, just ahead of Matt Weston's performance of 49-9¼.  Karsten was also eighth in the discus with his throw of 149-9, while Logan Shearer (The Woodlands, TX/Woodlands Christian Academy) was eighth in the 800-meters in 1:55.23 along with Luke Allen (Jefferson City, MO/Calvary Lutheran) in the long jump at 22-9 and Garrett  Friday in the hammer at 170-7.

Josh Hallum (Burnsville, MN/St. Thomas Academy) had a ninth place performance in the 100-meters in 10.92 seconds and Brandon Religa (Manhattan, KS/Manhattan) was 10th in the 800 in 1:56.22, as was Duncan Clark (Kirksville, MO/Kirksville) in the 3,000-meters in 9:10.55.  Miller finished 11th in the shot with a mark of 46-3½, while Friday was right behind him at 44-10¾. 

Mark Echele (St. Charles, MO/St. Charles West) finished 10th in the hammer at 151-10, a spot ahead of Morgan Cornish (West Plains, MO/West Plains), who had a throw of 150-7, while Weston added a 12th place effort in the discus with a throw of 139-1.

Andrew Scherff (St. Charles, MO/Francis Howell North HS) came in 11th place in the pole vault as he cleared 14-3¼ -- the same height cleared by Sheaffer Smith (Collinsville, IL/Collinsville) to put him in 13th place --and Augie Bindbeutel finished 13th in the 100-meters in 11.22 seconds.  Smith also had a 13th place effort in the javelin at 162-2, right ahead of Nick Anselmo (St. Charles, MO/St. Charles West)'s mark of 157-11.

Miller finished in 14th in the hammer at 147-9, while S&T had two 15th place finishes that came from Nick Anselmo (St. Charles, MO/St. Charles West) in the hammer throw at 144-feet and Justin Murdock (Camdenton, MO/Camdenton) in the discus at 125-3.

In the relays, the Miners' team of Justin Hawkins (O'Fallon, IL/Montrose), Alex Staples (River Forest, IL/Oak Park River Forest), Shearer and Frisella finished fifth in the 4x400-relay in 3:18.61, while the quartet of Allen, Bindbeutel, Hallum and Ben Krause (Winfield, MO/Troy Buchanan) came in ninth in the 4x100-meter event in 43.37 seconds.

Aly VanCardo (St. Louis, MO/Lindbergh) had the highest finish among the women's competitors at Arkansas, finishing fifth in the 800-meters with a time of 2:18.21, while Anne Massey (St, Louis, MO/Lindbergh HS) also recorded a top-10 showing  by taking ninth place in the 100-meter hurdles in 15.20 seconds.

The Lady Miners' 4x100-meter relay team of Madison Calvin, Massey, Cambria Ryckman (Rolla, MO/Rolla) and Anne Simpson (St. Louis, MO/Lindbergh) also finished ninth in a time of 51.13 seconds, while the 4x400-relay team of Kim Huskey (Hillsboro, MO/Grandview HS), VanCardo, Calvin and Simpson ended up 10th in 4:11.94.

Brittany Moore had a 13th place showing in the hammer throw with a mark of 120-7, while Amanda Wetzel (Keller, TX/Keller) finished in 14th place in the pole vault with a clearance of 11-5¾, Hannah Shearer (Conroe, TX/The Woodlands Christian Academy) placed 15th in the invitational 800-meters with her time of 4:57.47 and Cambria Ryckman (Rolla, MO/Rolla) was 16th in the long jump at 16-7¼.

Missouri S&T's next competition will take place next Saturday at the Washington University Invitational in St. Louis.
