CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. – Missouri S&T picked up three more event victories on the final day of competition at the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championships Saturday and finished in third place overall at the league's inaugural meet.
The Miners narrowly missed finishing in second, as Indianapolis held off S&T by just four points in the team standings. Drury took the team title with 838 points, while Indianapolis was second with 747.5 and the Miners third with 743.5.
S&T's wins on Saturday came from its event winners on Friday,
Ethan Goldfarb (Arlington, Texas/The Oakridge School) and
Keith Sponsler (Lincoln, Neb./Lincoln East), as well as its 400-yard freestyle relay team to give the Miners wins in three of the five relays contested at the meet and eight event titles overall. Miner head coach
Doug Grooms was named as the GLVC's "Coach of the Year" following the meet.
Goldfarb led a one-two finish for the Miners in the 200-yard breaststroke, edging teammate
Miguel Chavez (Chihuahua, Mexico/Colegio de Bachilleres) in a time of 1:58.51. Chavez, who had the fastest time in the morning preliminaries of 1:59.62, posted a 1:59.18 in the finals that also made an NCAA Division II provisional qualifying mark.
Drew Larkins (Chesterfield, Mo./Parkway Central) added a seventh place finish in the 200-breaststroke in 2:04.29.
Sponsler tied with UIndy's Justin Rossillo – who was named as the men's swimmer of the year – for the 100-yard freestyle title as the two touched the wall in 44.68 seconds.
Luke Norris (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands) was fourth in the event in 45.08 seconds.
S&T's 400-yard freestyle relay recorded the third relay win for the Miners at the meet, with the quartet of Norris,
Aljaz Kerc (Ljubljana, Slovenia/Gimnazija Bezigrad),
Jon Glaser (Wildwood, Mo./Lafayette) and Sponsler putting in a school record time of 2:57.79 to win over Indianapolis' team by nearly two seconds.
The Miners also got a third place finish from
Chase Davis (Tulsa, Okla./Union) in the 200-yard butterfly in a provisional time of 1:50.28 and had two finishers among the top eight in the 200-yard backstroke in
Ryan Layne (Houston, Texas/Cypress Creek), who was fifth in 1:51.70 – an NCAA provisional time as well -- and
Nate Kamrath (Newburgh, Ind./Castle), who was eighth in 1:53.55.
Alfredo Martinez (Mexico City, Mexico/Instituto Cumbres San Javier) took ninth in the 1,650-freestyle in 16:49.98 as did Kerc in the 100-freestyle in 45.53 seconds.
Chris Lohff (Powder Springs, Ga./Hillgrove) finished in 10
th place in the 200-butterfly in 1:57.37.
The NCAA will announce its field for the national meet on Wednesday, Feb. 26 . Missouri S&T has 12 members of its team that have made at least an provisional qualifying mark, with the 800-freestyle team of Norris, Kerc, Sponsler and Glaser hitting the automatic standard on Wednesday night.
