ST. LOUIS, Mo. –
Ethan Goldfarb (Arlington, Texas/The Oakridge School) captured two events Saturday to help lead Missouri S&T's swimming team to a third place finish at the Washington University Invitational, the Miners' first meet since returning from the holiday break.
Goldfarb won the 400-yard individual medley in 4:07.71, a day after winning the 200-IM, then took first in the 200-yard breaststroke later in the afternoon as he recorded a time of 2:05.58.
The Miners ended up third behind Lindenwood and host Washington University in the team standings with 698 points.
S&T had three of the top six finishers in the 50-yard freestyle, led by
Luis Nesrala (Santo Domingo, D.R./Colegio Amador)'s second place finish in 21.78 seconds.
Aljaz Kerc (Ljubljana, Slovenia/Gimnazija Bezigrad) was third in 21.86 seconds and
Keith Sponsler (Lincoln, Neb./Lincoln East) placed sixth in 21.96 seconds.
Jon Glaser (Wildwood, Mo./Lafayette) placed second in the 1,650-yard freestyle in 16:24.12 and would later finish third in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:44.40.
S&T also got a second place showing from its 200-yard freestyle relay quartet of
Luke Norris (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands), Kerc, Nesrala and Sponsler in a time of 1:35.64.
The Miners had two relays finish third, as the 400-yard medley relay team of
Ryan Layne (Houston, Texas/Cypress Creek),
Miguel Chavez (Chihuahua, Mexico/Colegio de Bachilleres),
Chase Davis (Tulsa, Okla./Union) and Norris finished third in a time of 3:32.63 and the 400-freestyle team of Norris, Kerc, Glaser and Sponsler had a mark of 3:12.65 for its third place finish.
Layne was third on an individual basis in the 100-yard backstroke in 55.05 seconds and also had a fifth place showing in the 400-IM in 4:18.81. Chavez was third in the 200-breaststroke in 2:06.28, while
Drew Larkins (Chesterfield, Mo./Parkway Central) took fifth in that event in 2:12.23.
Davis finished fourth in the 100-yard butterfly in 53.32 seconds, while Nesrala finished seventh in the 100-backstroke in 55.57 seconds and
Nate Kamrath (Newburgh, Ind./Castle) took ninth in the 100-butterfly in 54.13 seconds.
The Miners will return to action Friday when they host Truman State in a dual meet beginning at 5 p.m. at the S&T Pool at the Bullman Multi-Purpose Building.

Missouri S&T's swimming team had two first place finish and several others among the top 10 Friday on the opening night of the Washington University Invitational.
Goldfarb captured first in the 200-yard individual medley in a time of 1:57.26, while the other victory came from S&T's 800-yard freestyle relay team of
Luke Norris (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands),
Keith Sponsler (Lincoln, Neb./Lincoln East),
Aljaz Kerc (Ljubljana, Slovenia/Gimnazija Bezigrad) and
Jon Glaser (Wildwood, Mo./Lafayette), as they won that race in a time of 7:02.36.
Sponsler also took third in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 48.08 seconds, while S&T got a third place finish from
Miguel Chavez (Chihuahua, Mexico/Colegio de Bachilleres) – swimming in his first meet for the Miners – in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 59.02 second and also placed fourth with a mark of 1:59.22 in the 200-IM. Glaser was fourth in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:44.45 and
Ryan Layne (Houston, Texas/Cypress Creek) did so in the 200-yard breaststroke in 1:59.52.
The Miners' 200-yard medley relay team of
Luis Nesrala (Santo Domingo, D.R./Colegio Amador), Goldfarb,
Chase Davis (Tulsa, Okla./Union) and Sponsler finished fourth in a time of 1:38.01. Kerc was fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 59.83 seconds and
Nate Kamrath (Newburgh, Ind./Castle) tied for fifth in the 200-breaststroke with his time of 1:59.85. Davis recorded a sixth-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly in 1:59.56.
Drew Larkins (Chesterfield, Mo./Parkway Central) finished seventh in the 100-breaststroke in 1:00.65, while Kerc was ninth in the 100-freestyle in 48.87 seconds and Larkins added a 10
th–place showing in the 200-IM in 2:03.21.
The Miners also had a sixth-place finish by its second 800-freestyle relay team of
Alfredo Martinez (Mexico City, Mexico/Instituto Cumbres San Javier), Goldfarb, Kamrath and Layne with a time of 7:11.79.
