Second half woes cost Lady Miners

Box Score LIBERTY, Mo. – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners shot only 24 percent from the field in the second half and were unable to overcome a hot-shooting William Jewell ball club in its 73-55 loss in Liberty on Saturday afternoon.

The first half was a series of runs between the two sides as the lead changed nine times in the first nine minutes of the contest. The Cardinals (16-9, 10-7 GLVC) led 16-12 at the midway point of the first half, but the Lady Miners (14-10, 10-6 GLVC) quickly answered with four straight to tie it on a basket by Senait McLeod (Miami, Fla./Coral Reef) with 8:15 left in the stanza.

William Jewell answered on the other end getting back-to-back three's from Katlyn Wood and Kelsey Nickerson to take its biggest lead of the half at 22-16 just 0:40 later. S&T countered though with a 12-0 run of its own behind a pair of three's from Toni Knar (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) to take a 28-22 with 3:18 to play in the frame.

The Lady Miners led by four with a minute left in the half, but the Cardinals hit a pair of three's to go into the break with a 32-30 advantage.

S&T shot 40 percent (10 for 25) from the field in the opening half, 2 of 5 from three and was 8 for 8 at the foul line. Hailee Parks (Sullivan, Mo./Sullivan) led the way with eight points. Knar dropped home six while McLeod and Katelyn Heil (Dexter, Mo./Dexter) dropped in four each. The Lady Miners outrebounded the Cardinals 22-12 in the first half, but turned it over 12 times.

Jewell shot 39 percent (12 of 31) from the floor, 4 for 10 from three and was 4 of 4 at the charity stripe. Wood and Cassy Nicolay had eight points apiece to lead the Cardinals.

The second half was a different story as Jewell stretched its lead five within the first three minutes of the second half. S&T fought back with five straight points to tie the game back up at 38 on a pair of free throws by Parks at the 16:20 mark.

From that point the Cardinals began to pull away going on a 19-5 run over the next nine minutes to build a 57-43 with 7:25 left in the game. The Lady Miners cut the lead to 57-48 on a layup by Heil at the 5:36 mark, but five straight points from Wood and Aerial Smith extended the lead back to 14 points and it wouldn't go under double figures the rest of the way. Jewell led by as many as 21 at 73-52 with less than a minute to play. Heil's 3-pointer with 0:42 left concluded the scoring.

S&T was 9 for 38 from the field in the second half and finished the game shooting 30.2 percent (19 of 63). The Lady Miners shot 40 percent (6 for 15) from beyond the arc and went 11 of 11 at the foul line. Parks was the lone player in double figures with 12 points. Heil and Kyesha Hall (Dodson, La./) had nine points apiece.

The Cardinals shot 48 percent in the second half and finished the game shooting 43 (26 for 60) percent from the floor, 9 of 21 (43 percent) from three and 12 for 14 at the foul line. Meeks scored 14 of her 16 points in the second half to lead four Jewell players in double figures. Wood dropped in 15 while Smith and Nickerson added 13 and 12 points respectively.

S&T is back at home on Monday night when it hosts Rockhurst beginning at 5:30 p.m.
